Today at Citi Field, Sandy Alderson briefed reporters about the Michael Bourn and Brandon Lyon situations. Regarding Brandon Lyon, Alderson said that if the team agrees to a contract with him, that he is likely finished adding additional arms to the bullpen this winter. “The bullpen can’t be worse and has the potential to be a lot better,” Alderson explained. As we reported yesterday, Jon Heyman of CBS Sports said the Mets were close to signing Lyon, while Andy Martino added that Lyon was still negotiating with other teams. Alderson added that righthander Jenrry Mejia will enter camp as a starting pitcher, while Jeurys Familia will be strictly a reliever. Regarding Michael Bourn, Alderson said he is still negotiating with his agent and that he will not ask the league to protect their first-round draft pick until he comes to terms on a contract with Bourn first. Alderson doesn’t believe the rule on draft pick protection needs to be changed, only that it needs to be altered. Finally, ...

Alderson: The Future Is Not That Far Off

While talking to reporters at a luncheon at Citi Field, Sandy Alderson said that the future of the Mets is almost at hand and that they can become very competitive, very soon with just a move or two. “We’re getting to the point where we can be in the mix,” Alderson said on Monday. “I don’t want anybody to believe this is a long-term project that has no possible realization...

Report: Michael Bourn Having ‘Ongoing Discussions’ With Mets

Spring training is right around the corner and, shockingly, free agent Michael Bourn still hasn’t signed on with a new club. The latest team to show interest in the speedy outfielder is the New York Mets, according to The Star-Ledger. Mets general manager Sandy Alderson said there is “ongoing discussion” with Bourn. Since Bourn’s former team, the Atlanta Braves, sent Bourn...

Reports: Mets close to signing P Lyon

The New York Mets are close to reaching a deal with free-agent relief pitcher Brandon Lyon, multiple media outlets reported Sunday. It's unclear what the terms of the agreement would be, and MLB.com reported that the deal has not been finalized and Lyon is still talking with other teams. Lyon, 33, was 4-2 with a 3.10 earned run average with the Blue Jays and Astros last...

Mets Still Want MLB To Protect Pick, Will Go All Out For Bourn

A Mets source told Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe that the front office is still trying to get MLB to allow them to keep their first-round pick if they sign Michael Bourn. They are still trying to determine whether they can convince Bourn to sign a potential backloaded deal and that they will go “all out on the compensation”  if they know their pick will be protected...

Michael Bourn rumors: Rays, Mets, Mariners fits for free agent?

Michael Bourn remains a free agent, and Jim Bowden of ESPN speculates that the Tampa Bay Rays, New York Mets and Seattle Mariners are the three teams that make the most sense for the talented center fielder. What teams make the most sense for Michael Bourn at this point? in my opinion: TB, NYM & Sea....and for Kyle Lohse? Box,TX,LAA,Milw,Balt — JIM BOWDEN (@JimBowdenESPNxm...

Mets close to signing reliever Brandon Lyon

The New York Mets and relief pitcher Brandon Lyon are close to reaching a deal. Lyon, 33, would assume a late inning role in the Mets bullpen. Lyon spent last season with Houston and Toronto finishing with 3.10 ERA and a 1.25 WHIP over 61 innings of work. The Mets have signed right handers Scott Atchison and LaTroy Hawkins this week. The addition of Lyon would seemingly finish their...

The Clock Has Started Ticking On The Sandy Experiment

Pundits often say a college football coach deserves at least two years to turn a team over before anyone can honestly pass judgement.  That time provides the new coach with enough time to recruit his own players and implement his own scheme.  General managers in Major League Baseball get no such grace period.  Thus the dilemma Sandy Alderson currently finds himself in. Since taking...

David Wright  told The NY Post yesterday, that he has spoken with and exchanged texts with free-agent center fielder Michael Bourn in an attempt to lure him to Citi Field. “I just wanted to let him know that he would be a great addition here and he’d obviously be welcomed here,’’ Wright said after his first early workout at the Mets’ spring training complex. “I talked...

Indians One Of Many Teams That Will Consider Bourn If Price Drops

The Indians might be one of many teams that will be interested in signing free agent Michael Bourn if his price comes down according to Buster Olney of ESPN. As I wrote last week, I was afraid this would happen the longer this dragged out. Scott Boras isn’t concerned with making friends, only getting his clients the largest deals they can get. He always keeps busy working the...

The Mets’ Low-Risk Bullpen Rebuild

Last offseason, Mets GM Sandy Alderson spent just $17.8 million on Major League free agents. Most of that when to Frank Francisco ($12 million) and Jon Rauch ($3.5 million), and the club also absorbed Ramon Ramirez‘s salary ($2.75 million) in the ill-fated Angel Pagan trade. Those three were supposed to join incumbents Bobby Parnell and Tim Byrdak to give the Amazin’s a solid...

Spring Training ’13: Darin Gorski Will Get Long Look As Reliever

Darin Gorski, Binghamton Mets (photograph by MMO) On Monday, general manager Sandy Alderson talked a little bit about Mets left-handed pitching prospect Darin Gorski. Alderson said that Gorski will get a serious look as a reliever in Spring Training, but it is unlikely he’ll make the Opening Day roster. The Mets just want to see how Gorski performs in that role. Gorski, 25, has...
