Before Monday’s game against the Cincinnati Reds, Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo gave an update on the status of center fielder Alek Thomas and other injured players.
Lovullo said that Alek Thomas received a platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection on the injured left hamstring Monday and they’re waiting a couple of days to see how he responds to it before they decide the next steps.
“We’re going to keep things as active as we possibly can, and clearly he’s not able to get on his legs and do the running we want to,” said Lovullo. “He can still keep the range of motion with his arm and do those type of things. But the running, standing up and firing on his legs when he’s hitting, we’re going to have to hold off on.”
Thomas, 24, originally strained his left hamstring on March 31. It appeared he was close to returning, as he embarked on a rehab assignment with Triple-A Reno on May 3-5. He reported more soreness in the hamstring the following day and was sent back to Phoenix for further evaluation. Lovullo clarified that it was a continuation of the original injury, not a new one.
The plan is to eventually get him into rehab games before activating Thomas from the injured list, but Lovullo said that Thomas isn’t close to playing any rehab games.
Geraldo Perdomo has been doing cagework and taking live batting practice. He’s also been working on the AlterG Anti-Gravity Treadmill at around 50% of his body weight. He will take some ground balls and throw Tuesday, with Lovullo saying his shortstop is in a good spot.
Perdomo, 24, suffered a torn meniscus on April 2 and underwent surgery the following Monday. It’s been roughly five weeks since he underwent surgery, so he should theoretically be nearing a return soon. Perdomo was named the club’s starting shortstop at the start of Spring Training.
Arizona has treaded water at the shortstop position, with Kevin Newman (0.6) and Blaze Alexander (-0.3) combining for 0.3 Wins Above Replacement. Alexander has graded poorly on defense, with -9 defensive runs saved, and Newman is sporting a .216/.247/.378 triple slash in 77 plate appearances.
