The Detroit Tigers have removed banged-up catcher Alex Avila from Game 5 of the AL championship series against the Boston Red Sox with a sprained left knee.
Brayan Pena pinch hit for Avila in the 4th inning Thursday night. With Detroit trailing by four runs, Pena grounded into an inning-ending double play with two on in the first postseason at-bat of his nine-year career.
DETROIT -- If it is possible for a 6'7" man to get lost in a crowd, Doug Fister would be the one.
He's already the forgotten man of the Tigers pitching rotation -- not a Cy Young winner like Justin Verlander and, quite soon, Max Scherzer, and without an ERA championship and a 17-strikeout game like Anibal Sanchez.
He doesn't throw 97 mph like the other three,...
DETROIT The Detroit Tigers now find themselves in a position to make history or go home after losing Game 5 to the Boston Red Sox on Thursday night.
Since the best-of-seven format was adopted in 1985, only four American League Championship Series were knotted at 2-2, as this one was.
The Game 5 winner went onto reach the World Series in all four of those previous situations....
Whether or not the Detroit Tigers' bats woke up Wednesday night because manager Jim Leyland sent his hitters to the plate in a different order is debatable, but the move apparently jolted outfielder Austin Jackson out of his slumber in more ways than one. Jackson said he woke up to the news that he was bumped from his familiar leadoff spot to batting eighth in Game 4 against...
Will Middlebrooks was able to go from first to third on a sacrifice bunt in the ninth inning of Thursday’s Game 5 in Detroit, and he got some help from third base umpire Rob Drake in the process. For some reason, Drake set up shop directly behind catcher Brayan Pena, who was covering the base and tried to apply the tag to the sliding Middlebrooks. Instead, Pena ended up accidentally...
Jim Leyland is an elder statesman of the game, usually recognized as one of the best managers in baseball, and his Tigers just won their third straight division title. The three best managers of the last generation, Bobby Cox, Tony La Russa, and Joe Torre, have all retired. So, is Leyland a future Hall of Famer?
Jim Leyland has managed for 22 seasons. Remarkably, all of them have...
APNewsNow. Will be updated. With AP Photos. By NOAH TRISTER AP Baseball Writer Jhonny Peralta is trying to make the most of a second chance with the Detroit Tigers that was far from guaranteed.
The Detroit portion of Peralta's career looked like it might be over when he was suspended 50 games in early August following a drug investigation by Major League Baseball, but despite...
Does lineup construction matter? Other than making sure a team's best batters get more at-bats, many would argue that how a lineup is put together doesn't make much of a difference.
However, the Tigers and manager Jim Leyland will probably disagree with that. Their fans might too. At least for one night. Detroit's new-look lineup broke out for seven runs, battering...
Miguel Cabrera got an easy steal in the fourth and while the game was anything but a steal it was a pretty easy win for the Detroit Tigers. A 5-run second inning gave the Tigers an early comfortable lead that they never lost. They tacked on another pair of runs in the fourth for a 7-0 lead.
Boston would make it look a little better by tacking on a run in the 6th, 7th, and...
The Detroit Tigers havent played in a Game 7 in 45 years.
But the potential for that exists if Max Scherzer can beat the Boston Red Sox on Saturday, and provide Justin Verlander a chance to start a winner-take-all game Sunday night at Fenway Park.
Scherzer has struck out 26 in 16 innings during this postseason, while posting a 2.25 ERA and frustrating batters by holding them to...
After game 2 in which Miguel Cabrera belted a home run (his second in three games), he had arguably the worst postseason game of his career on Tuesday at Comerica Park, going without a hit for the first time as a Tiger in the postseason. What went wrong? We dive in.
There is a lot riding on Game 5 of the ALCS for both teams. With the series tied 2-2 the winner will move within a game of heading to the World Series and the loser a game away from being eliminated. Basically it means the pressure is on (in case it already wasn't). Elimination is imminent.
Through 5 1/2 innings the Tigers have not had much to...
