The #Pirates option RHP Phil Irwin to AAA Indianapolis and recall OF Alex Presley. — Pittsburgh Pirates (@Pirates) April 15, 2013 As expected, the Pirates sent Phil Irwin back to Triple-A after yesterday’s spot start. I would not be surprised to see him back (and would still prefer him over Jonathan Sanchez, probably), but Irwin could probably benefit from some more time in the minors. He’s only made five career starts in Triple-A. Alex Presley got the call to replace Irwin. Presley should add some speed and outfield defense off the bench, and also gives the Bucs a lefty on the bench for days when Garrett Jones and Travis Snider both start. Alex was off to a hot start in Indianapolis, going 10-for-28 (.357) with a homer. He essentially replaces Josh Harrison, who was sent down to make room for Irwin over the weekend. I had figured Brandon Inge would come up today instead, but he has been pretty terrible so far in Indy (4 for 32) and may not be fully recovered from his wrist injury. He may still be coming up shortly, and my guess would be Presley will head right back to Indy as soon as that happens.
