Who doesn’t love this man? It’s how amazing how good David Ortiz has been for the Red Sox since they picked him up in 2003 after the Minnesota Twins RELEASED him! That last laser beam in the bottom of the 9th inning last night was Ortiz’s 10th career walk-off home run in a Red Sox uniform,  that’s 7th best all-time in baseball history, not counting the damage he has inflicted in the postseason. Since returning April 20th against Kansas City, Ortiz has racked up 42 RBI’s and a .624 slugging percentage. He puts a true power threat back into the Sox line up and makes it feel complete again, doesn’t he? Last night he was the hero. No Rangers fan on the planet could convince me that it was a good decision to intentionally walk Dustin Pedroia to get to David Ortiz. Whatever strategy Texas thought they were using was actually a cheat code for a loss. You know why you’ve never seen a team seek out Ortiz to face with the game on the line? Because it’s slightly moronic. I get the lefty vs. lefty matchup argument that many will make, and there is evidence with Ortiz to support that. He’s hitting just .250 with 4 HR’s against lefties, as opposed to .382 and 7 HR’s against right handers. His slugging percentage also drops dramatically from .753 vs. righties to just .456 against lefties. However, Ortiz is not your everyday left handed hitter, and apparently the Texas Rangers were the last to get the memo. Winning this series against the Rangers was a big step for this year’s version of the Boston Red Sox. The Rangers’ have had the Sox number since 2009, gathering 29 wins in their last 43 games against Boston. They are absolutely one of the best teams in the MLB and will most likely make the playoffs again this year, led by the likes of Yu Darvish, Ian Kinsler, and Adrian Beltre(I dare you to touch his head). So it pleases me to see the Red Sox put together a nice series against them for once. The team is playing well right now so hopefully they ride this momentum forward against the Angels.
