Outfielder Torii Hunter turned 37 years old earlier this month, but he has been playing like a much younger man over the last six weeks.

"I wouldn't say (Hunter looks) rejuvenated because I don't know that I've ever seen Torii really down," manager Mike Scioscia said. "There's a frustration factor with every player and Torii certainly has it when he's not performing the way he thinks he can or the team isn't.

"But we've been playing good baseball, more consistent baseball and I think he's excited about where he is on the field and where he is with this group of guys too."

Scioscia might not say Hunter looks rejuvenated this season by the dynamism of rookie OF Mike Trout and the chance to return to the playoffs after two years away, but Hunter will.

"I thank Mike Scioscia for letting me hit in that 2-hole, letting me utilize my skills," Hunter said. "I do have a sense of rejuvenation."

Hunter was hitting only .238 on June 7, having gone through a difficult stretch in May when he left the team for nearly three weeks to deal with a family matter.

But Scioscia decided to plug Hunter into the No. 2 spot in the lineup between Trout and Albert Pujols. He took off immediately, sharing AL Player of the Week honors with Trout, and has hit .318 (47-for-148) with 29 runs scored and 28 driven in over the last 38 games.

Hunter reached two milestones with a four-hit game Wednesday. He hit his 100th home run as an Angel and reach 1,900 hits in his career. He admits watching the emergence of the 20-year-old Trout this season has sparked something within him as well.

"With Trout up-and-coming, the new thing, the five-tool player -- I mean, he's special to me and I'm a player," Hunter said. "I can imagine how the average fan, the media feel. This guy is something special. It's my goal to be fruitful and give him everything he needs, whether it's off the field or on the field to help his career and push his career.

"That's what I'm going to do as a veteran player. I'm not going to sit back and say, 'I'm jealous, whatever, whatever.' I'm 37 -- I mean 27. So, that's my job and goal in life, and every veteran should do the same."
