BOSTON — With all the holes the Boston Red Sox had to fill entering this past offseason, closer probably wasn’t on top of the list for most fans. Although Andrew Bailey had endured a rough 2012 campaign, he never really got his feet under him after returning from surgery on his right thumb late last season. Nonetheless, when former Pirates closer Joel Hanrahan become available over the winter, the Red Sox jumped at the chance to acquire him, and how the Red Sox essentially boast two closers holding down the eighth and ninth innings. Of course, not all closers have fared well when losing that role, but Bailey looks primed for a big season in a setup role despite losing the only job he’s ever known in Major League Baseball. “I don’t really see too much trouble in that transition,” said Bailey after Monday’s 3-1 home-opener win over the Orioles. “You still have a job to do, you’re the closer of the eighth inning, or however you want to say it. But you’ve got to pick up the team, the on...

John Lackey diagnosed with biceps strain

In his first start since undergoing Tommy John surgery, the Red Sox and John Lackey got a scare.  He pitched 4 1/3 innings before throwing a pitch and grabbing his arm in obvious pain.  Lackey had to leave the game after the pitch, and there was some immediate concern that the injury could be related to elbow.  Fortunately, it was his biceps, but the injury is still concerning...

Jon Lester was the Red Sox’ Opening Day starter, and he’s considered the team’s ace in the minds of many. Clay Buchholz, the starter for Monday’s home opener, continues to match the southpaw step for step. Buchholz tossed seven shutout innings against the Orioles on Monday. It marks the second straight outing Buchholz has gone seven innings, and he and Lester now hold a combined...

Will Middlebrooks ‘Couldn’t Ask for Anything Better’ From Daniel Nava in Home Opener (Video)

Three years ago, Daniel Nava sent the first pitch he saw in a Red Sox uniform into the Fenway Park bullpen for a grand slam. Starting in his first home opener at Fenway on Monday, Nava went deep again. Going, Going, Gone: Boston's Will Middlebrooks Hits Three Home Runs Against Blue Jays

One of the many great things about baseball is that on any given day it is practically impossible not to find at least one amazing play. With so many games being played the odds are heavily in favor of greatness being exhibited somewhere. Sunday that greatness was in evidence in Toronto when Boston Red Sox third baseman found the sweet spot not once...not twice...but three times...

John Lackey ‘Unlikely’ to Make Next Start But Might Avoid Disabled List Stint

John Lackey’s season — and perhaps career — looked like they were in jeopardy when the right-hander walked off the mound Saturday. Now, the outlook is far more encouraging. Manager John Farrell said before Monday’s home opener that Lackey, who left Saturday’s start in the fifth inning with a bicep strain, is in the midst of a 48- to 72-hour recovery period. Farrell said...

John Lackey hurts arm again

It's hard to believe that in December in 2009 John Lackey was a desired commodity. The Seattle Mariners, New York Yankees, New York Mets, Boston Red Sox, and Pittsburgh Pirates, were all interested in Lackey. Lackey had been the Angels ace and was one of six pitchers that won at least eleven games from 2004-2009. Baseball Prospectus said that, "Lackey stands alone as...
