Will Andrew Brackman enter the discussion as the next Yankees' closer?
For the record, when it comes to a starter vs. reliever debate, I am almost always going to be in the starter camp. Each situation is unique but, generally, I believe a solid starter is more valuable than a solid reliever. With that said, I’ve been intrigued by the idea of Andrew Brackman taking over as the next New York Yankees closer once Mariano Rivera hangs it up. Certain attributes – the ability to generate swings and misses, induce ground outs and keep the ball in the park – are great for any pitcher to possess, but are especially important for late inning relievers. Andrew Brackman possesses these attributes.
Above all else, I value strikeout ability from my late inning relievers. Obviously, it is virtually impossible to get on base if you’re swinging and missing at strike three. No contact means no bleeders, no dribblers, no errors, no BS. His career 8.3 K/9 between A, A+ and AA is very good, b...
