The Pirates have finally answered the cries of nearly every fan that reads regular minor league updates, checks Twitter, or just wants to see some offense out of right field. They are calling up Andrew Lambo for tonight’s game against the Cardinals. Lambo is a 25 year old that was acquired years ago in the James McDonald / Octavio Dotel trade. He had been a fairly pretty disappointing prospect up until this season, when he started tearing the cover off the ball. Between Double-A and Triple-A (almost exactly equal time in both), Lambo is tied for the minor league lead with 31 homers this season. He’s been doing a good job hitting for average (.284) and getting on base (.350) as well – although the major problem is an enormous strikeout rate (over 25%…Pedro’s at 31% for reference). The Pirates have been reluctant to call up Lambo, and that strikeout problem is probably the main reason. He’s certainly not a sure thing. This is a career year for him – he was stuck in AA fo...

Pirates Officially Call up Andrew Lambo, Option Alex Presley

Andrew Lambo has been officially called up. (Photo Credit: David Hague) The Pittsburgh Pirates have officially called up Andrew Lambo, and have optioned Alex Presley to Triple-A. The Pirates had to add Lambo to the 40-man roster, although no corresponding move was needed since there was an open spot. Moving Presley down made sense, as the Pirates can’t carry two bench outfielders...

The Book on Andrew Lambo

Andrew Lambo is free. Andrew Lambo is finally free. The Pirates will call the right fielder up today after watching him hit 31 homers in the minors this year. Lambo became the first Pirates minor leaguer to do that since Steve Pearce in 2007. The story of how Lambo got to this point isn’t a traditional prospect story. He was formerly a top prospect, saw his stock fall, saw that...

Pittsburgh Pirates to skip Gerrit Cole’s next start

There has been speculation that the Pittsburgh Pirates would skip Gerrit Cole’s next start. On Sunday, the Pirates announced Charlie Morton, Francisco Liriano and A.J. Burnett as the starters for the series starting Tuesday in St. Louis. Skipping Cole’s next outing would give the young right-hander a few extra days of rest and help reduce Cole’s innings, which will be a concern...

Pirates Free Andrew Lambo, Sign Catcher.

Well…  He’s free.  Hot hitting outfielder Andrew Lambo has been called up by the Pittsburgh Pirates.  Lambo’s power has been nothing short of astounding this season between AA and AAA. A lot of people assume Lambo is older than he is. He’s only 24 despite spending seven seasons in the minors. For Lambo it’s the…

Prospect Watch: Josh Bell Hits 11th Homer; Kris Johnson Injured

TOP OF THE SYSTEM A look at how the current top 20 prospects did today. Note that this list doesn’t include players currently in the majors. If a player is in the majors, he will be removed, everyone below him will be shifted up a spot, and a new player will be added to the bottom of the list. Rankings are from the mid-season rankings, and links on each name go to their Pirates...

Top Performers: Andrew Lambo Finishes Strong With Indianapolis

Below are the top Runs Created* totals in the Pittsburgh Pirates’ farm system from the last week. The rankings include every hitter who had an at-bat for a Pirates’ minor league affiliate, not including DSL teams, and with no limitations on whether the hitter has prospect eligibility. Players who spent time at different levels are counted multiple times, once for each level,...

Pirates Prospects is Changing Servers

As I mentioned last night in First Pitch, the site has been in the process of changing servers today. At some point in the next 24 hours you will switch over to the new server. The site won’t be any different, and the only way to tell you’re on the new server will be this post. If you can access this post, you’re on the old server. If you can’t access this post, you’re...

Preview: Cards look to keep Pirates on their heels

After rallying to win a marathon contest against the NL Central leaders, the St. Louis Cardinals might have found the boost they need to make a run and catch the slumping Pittsburgh Pirates. The Cardinals look for a third straight victory while trying to hand the Pirates a season-high fifth consecutive defeat Wednesday night at Busch Stadium. St. Louis (68-50) dropped four of five...

Pirates Agree to Terms With Kelly Shoppach

The Pittsburgh Pirates have agreed to terms with Kelly Shoppach on a minor league deal, and have assigned him to Indianapolis. Shoppach has spent time this year with Seattle and Washington, before being released on July 31st by the Nationals. He hit for a .196/.293/.346 line in 107 at-bats with Seattle in the majors, which is well below the .782-.865 OPS at the height of his career...

Cards face Pirates in a three-game, not-yet-must-win series

ST. LOUIS -- With two more series to come with the Pirates after this week, this upcoming three-game set hardly is a must-win for the Cardinals in the race for the NL Central. Only three games separate the teams heading into Tuesday night. But in the race for respect, the Cardinals could use a couple of victories. Their struggles against Pittsburgh are not limited to this season...

The biggest series (part two)

The Pirates' first real test as contenders this year was the five-game set against the Cardinals at PNC Park two weeks ago, and the Pirates passed that test with flying colors. As a result, the Bucs have been in first place for two full weeks now. What their success in that series has earned them is this: another big series, this time on the road in St. Louis. This time, neither...

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Colorado Rockies – Game 117

Please let this series from Hell just end with no one getting hurt today!  Starling Marte is day to day.  Pedro Alvarez?  Who knows. The only bright spot is that the Cardinals and Reds both lost yesterday.  That’s the only silver lining, the fact that the Pirates didn’t lose ground. A.J. Burnett clearly ran out…

Pirates-Cardinals Preview

The Pittsburgh Pirates' three-game NL Central lead over the St. Louis Cardinals can partially be attributed to their play against their division rival. Now it's the Cardinals who feel like they have something to prove against the upstart Pirates. St. Louis has juggled its rotation so Adam Wainwright can start Tuesday night's opener of this much-anticipated three-game...

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. St. Louis Cardinals – Game 119

Losses like last night’s are what give me pause.  The Pirates snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.  It’s too common.  It’s too familiar.  It needs to stop immediately. Starling Marte should be benched.  At least one game. These guys should all be pretty ashamed of last night’s loss though, not just Marte.  Andrew McCutchen,…

Long memories

I got to work this morning with an e-mail from my dad waiting for me, telling me that maybe last night's game was just one game, but that everyone that watched it last night is cranky this morning and that it's a game that nobody will forget anytime soon. He talked about the time Matt Alou dropped a similar fly ball 40+ years ago and how he's never forgotten it. He also...
