Francisco Liriano injured, deal may be off

Welp. Just yesterday, I noted that Francisco Liriano still hadn’t actually signed with the Pirates yet. Now we know why: The Pirates’ agreement with left-hander Francisco Liriano, struck three weeks ago, appears to be off due to an injury suffered by the pitcher to his non-throwing right arm. According to an MLB source, Liriano suffered the unspecified injury in late December...

A lot of people really like Andrew McCutchen

I have to admit, when I heard about this MLB ’13 The Show “Cover Vote” that’s taking place this week, I didn’t think Andrew McCutchen had much of a shot. As awesome and likable as he is, I thought the more established competition with far bigger fan-bases would be too much to handle. Remember the All-Star voting when he didn’t even really come close to getting a starting...

News and notes

The first week of 2013 was a pretty slow one in terms of Pirates news, but here’s a quick roundup: As you’ve surely seen far too many times by now on Twitter or Facebook, Andrew McCutchen is in the running to be on the cover of MLB 13 The Show. Winter Leagues Recap: Marte Homers Again

In Dominican League playoff action from last night, Starling Marte went deep for the second time in three games, as his team won 6-4. Marte was the big bat of the game, going 3-for-4, with four RBI’s. He started the night off with a two-run home run in the first. Marte also added RBI singles in both the seventh and ninth innings. Besides picking up right where he left off at the...

Player Profile #179: Garrett Jones | 1B, OF | PIT

Believe it or not, but the Pittsburgh Pirates have the makings of a pretty good lineup and Garrett Jones is a big part of that. He’s not a great batter who you can count on to deliver when your team needs it most, but once October rolls around you seem to find yourself saying, “Hmm, I don’t remember Jones being that good.” Last year Jones turned what had always been his Achilles’...

Injury Delays Liriano Deal

According to Rob Biertempfel on Twitter, Francisco Liriano’s two-year deal with the Pittsburgh Pirates hasn’t been finalized due to the fact he injured his non-throwing arm. According to Biertempfel, the Pirates continue to talk to Liriano’s agent and no deal is imminent. The two sides initially agreed to a two-year, $12.75 M deal on December 21st.   LHP Francisco Liriano...

First Pitch: The Five Players That Represent a Microcosm of Neal Huntington’s Abilities

At the end of the 2012 season I wrote that 2013 was the make or break year for Neal Huntington and the current management group. When the group arrived in the 2007-08 off-season, the system was a wreck. There were hardly any prospects in the system, and very few players at the major league level who could be dealt for good returns. The guy with the biggest trade value at the time...

Pirates' Deal With Francisco Liriano May Break

The Pirates winter took a half step back today, as they "put on hold" their plans to sign free agent lefthander Francisco Liriano.  Liriano apparently injured his right (non-throwing) arm in late December.  Pirates General Manager Neal Huntington could not reveal the nature nor severity of the injury, citing medical privacy laws according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Reviews...

Locke hopes to be in Bucs rotation battle

The Pirates fifth starter job will come down to Kyle McPherson or Jeff Locke and a few other candidates who will emerge in spring training. Lefty Locke was 1-3 in a brief stint with the Bucs in 2012 He told PiratesDugout.com's George Von Benko that he hopes to be right in the thick of things in the battle for a spot in the rotation.

Bucs deal with Liriano on hold

The Pittsburgh Pirates deal with left-handed pitcher Francisco Liriano is in jeopardy. The deal for $12.75 million over two years for the free agent left-hander was reached back on December 21, but hasn't been finalized because Liriano hurt his right arm in December.

Link Roundup: Kyle McPherson, Jameson Taillon, Kris Johnson, Gerrit Cole

A few links to check out this morning. Kyle McPherson will be ready for Spring Training. **Rob Biertempfel spoke with Kyle McPherson, and notes that the right-hander will be ready for Spring Training. McPherson made one start in the Dominican Winter Leagues, then was removed due to shoulder tendonitis. It was the second time that a shoulder issue held the right-hander out of action...

Francisco Liriano deal in jeopardy due to

Remember way back before Christmas when the Pirates signed Francisco Liriano? And how that signing basically sealed the deal on a Joel Hanrahan trade on the assumption that Hanrahan's money was going towards Liriano? And how we all spent a bunch of time discussing whether or not Liriano was a better or worse risk/way to spend money than Jeff Karstens? And how the deal was dependent...

Winter Leagues Recap: Johnson Continues Strong Winter

In Dominican League playoff action from last night, Kris Johnson regained his form, rebounding from a poor start earlier in the week, to allow just on run over seven innings in his team’s 3-2 win. Johnson gave up five hits, one walk and he struck out six, with the only run he allowed coming in the seventh inning on a walk and a triple. In seven of his eight Winter League starts...
