The Outside Corner:
New York Yankees
Chicago White Sox
Earlier this afternoon, there was a brief news tidbit saying that Yankees starter Andy Pettitte had taken a ball off of his ankle and left the field during his start against the Indians today. Well, the news about the ankle is in, and it's a shocker: Pettitte has a broken ankle, and will miss at least six weeks. In a bit of good news for the Yankees, Pettitte's ankle won't need surgery. On the heels of CC Sabathia's groin strain that has knocked him out until the All-Star Break, this is not good news for the Yankees.
Pettitte was having a damn good season this year in his return to the majors. Coming into today's game, he had struck out 59 batters in 58 2/3 innings, posting a 3.22 ERA in nine starts. He was just adding to those numbers today, allowing one run over four innings to the Indians, walking one and striking out seven.
With Freddy Garcia starting for Sabathia on Friday against the White Sox, the Yankees are going to need a starter to fill Pettitte'...

Andy Pettitte was forced to leave today’s game vs the Indians in the fifth inning after getting hit on the lower left leg by a hard grounder. He tried to stay in the game but had to leave after throwing just one pitch to the next hitter.
With CC now headed for the DL, the last thing this team can afford is to lose another one of their top starters. Check back here for updates...
Andy Pettitte left Wednesday’s game in the 5th inning after taking a line drive off the bat of Casey Kotchman to the left ankle. Pettitte went down instantly, though managed to convince Joe Girardi and the training staff to let him remain in the game. After a few warm-up pitches, Pettitte threw just one pitch [...]
New York Yankees starter Andy Pettitte broke his left ankle and is expected to miss at least six weeks after he was hit by a line drive during Wednesday's game against the Cleveland Indians.
The Yankees say they expect the break to heal without surgery. The injury came on the same day the Yankees placed left-hander CC Sabathia on the 15-day disabled list with a strained groin...
The Yankees were dealt a tough injury blow on Wednesday after Andy Pettitte suffered a broken left ankle. The veteran lefty was hit on a liner up the middle by Casey Kotchman, and was unable to put weight on the leg while pitching to the next batter.

Before the Yankees completed a 3-game sweep of the Cleveland Indians yesterday the news broke that ace CC Sabathia was headed for the 15-DL.
And if that wasn’t enough to swallow during the 5th inning, veteran southpaw Andy Pettitte took a line drive off his left lower leg; and everyone in Yankee Stadium froze.
Pettitte threw just one more pitch; a perfect strike but the 40-year...
Andy Pettitte suffered a fractured ankle and will miss at least six weeks.
Down here in sunny Ocean City, Maryland, it hasn’t been hard for me to stay in the New York Yankees loop. Sunday’s and Monday’s games were broadcast on the nationally televised ESPN, and Wednesday afternoon I treated my dad to a day at a bar that prided itself on subscribing to the MLB package.
The Yankees look to sweep the Tribe this afternoon as they send Andy Pettitte to the mound. Pettitte has gone at least six innings in each of his eight starts, and he hasn’t walked more than three in any start. Jeter sits; Martin back behind plate. Right-hander Ubaldo Jimenez (7-5, 4.59 ERA) is on the [...]
With both pitchers landing on the disabled list within a span of about 24 hours, where do the Yankees go from here and how will it affect the AL East race?
Remember at the beginning of spring training when the New York Yankees had more rotation depth than any team in baseball? A lot can change in five months and the Yankees went from having a wealth of rotation depth to the equivalent of one of those houses the two guys from American Pickersvisit on the routine basis — rundown and shattered.
Big CC will be on the shelf for two weeks...
Pitching, pitching, pitching. This week's ladies linkfest is all about the guys who give it all they've got every fifth day:RebelYankeeChick is one of many who think Andy Pettitte's broken bone spells trouble for the New York Yankees.Jane Heller echos these sentiments over at Confessions Of A She-Fan.At Tales From The Juice Box, Terri writes about how good Astros pitching...
Last year, during Hope Week, the Yankiverse was stunned to hear the news of Hideki Irabu's suicide. This year, we lose Andy Pettitte and CC Sabathia in one day.As Goldfinger told James Bond, "Once is happenstance, twice is coincidence, and three times is a frickin' Yankee curse."I'm calling it a three-way. It's a curse. Don't get me wrong. I'm not...
Pitchers get hurt all the time, but I think we can all agree that CC Sabathia was on the short list of guys who we would expect to make every start in a given season. He’s been a workhorse of the first order for the last decade, but yesterday a twinge in his left groin sent him to the disabled list for the third time in his career and first time since 2006. The Yankees insist that...
NEW YORK (AP) -- Andy Pettitte broke his ankle on the same day the Yankees put CC Sabathia on the disabled list, and Robinson Cano hit a go-ahead homer to help New York beat the Cleveland Indians 5-4 Wednesday for a three-game sweep.
