ANAHEIM, Calif. With their pitching rotation struggling and the Texas Rangers still in firm command in the American League West, the Angels acquired the best starter on the market, trading for right-hander Zack Greinke of the Milwaukee Brewers. The trade was confirmed Friday by FOXSports.com. The Angels didnt have to give up prized pitcher Garrett Richards to get Greinke, who could pitch as soon as Sunday against the Tampa Bay Rays. Instead, they will send infielder Jean Segura and Double-A pitchers Ariel Pena and Johnny Hellweg. The Angels pulled Segura off the field just as players were beginning to get loosened up for their game against the Tampa Bay Rays. Greinke, the 2009 AL Cy Young Award winner, has a 9-3 record and a 3.44 ERA in 21 starts for the Brewers, who are 14 games out of the National League Central lead and would surely lose him to free agency this winter. They apparently did not offer him a contract extension this season. Greinke, 28, will fit into a rotation that starts with Jered Weaver and CJ Wilson. Dan Haren pitched well in his first start since coming off the disabled list but is 7-8 with a 4.76 ERA. Ervin Santana is attempting to sort out his pitching problems in the bullpen and is scheduled to throw five innings next week against the Texas Rangers. The Angels have not announced a roster move, but its possible Richards could be returned to Triple-A Salt Lake to make room for Greinke. In other news, manager Mike Scioscia said no decision has been made on whether to place shortstop Erick Aybar on the disabled list. Aybar is still recovering from a non-displaced fracture on the big toe of his right foot.
