ANAHEIM, Calif. -- The Angels got contributions from a future star and a current star Monday night to win their eighth consecutive game. Mike Trout and Albert Pujols led Los Angeles to a 5-1 decision over the New York Yankees. New York loaded the bases off Ernesto Frieri to bring the tying run to the plate in the ninth inning, but Frieri struck out Robinson Cano to end the game. Frieri hasn't allowed a hit or a run in his first 12 innings as an Angel. Trout, a 20-year-old who is hitting .304, has been a catalyst for the Angels and has helped dramatically turn around their season. The Angels were 6-14 when they recalled the leadoff man from Triple-A Salt Lake on April 28, and they are 20-11 since. "I couldn't imagine anyone being more skilled at that age," starter Dan Haren (3-5) said of Trout. "The guy can do it all." Pujols had two hits, scored two runs and drove in a pair with his two-run home run in the third inning, his eighth homer of the season and his fifth in his last eight games. "He's got some kind of routine. He prepares, he studies, he works hard," manager Mike Scioscia said of Pujols. "You can see why he's been so successful and why we felt he was going to find his stroke." Trout and Pujols helped make a winner out of Haren, who allowed just one run in seven innings and had seven strikeouts. Haren, who fired a shutout in his last start in Seattle on Thursday, has 21 strikeouts and no walks in 16 innings over his last two starts. "We're playing to our capabilities, we're not doing anything spectacular. We're just being who we are, and this is what we expected coming out of spring training," Haren said. "It's unfortunate that it took this long, but it's a lot of fun." Andy Pettitte (2-2) pitched seven innings for the Yankees, the third consecutive outing in which the 39-year-old veteran has gone at least that far, but he allowed five runs. Derek Jeter went 2-for-4 with a walk to extend his hitting streak to four games on the 17th anniversary of his major league debut. Jeter's 3,158 career hits are 26 behind Cal Ripken Jr. for 13th place on the all-time list. Nick Swisher went 1-for-4 and drove in the Yankees' only run but could have had a much bigger night were it not for Angels defenders. Trout robbed Swisher of a home run in the second inning, and Peter Bourjos caught would-be doubles off Swisher's bat in right-center field in both the seventh and eighth innings. "He just stole that from me," Swisher said of Trout's home run-saving grab. "The biggest fight for me is to not get frustrated after that." Mark Trumbo, Monday's hero with a walk-off home run, hit a solo home run off Pettitte in the bottom of the sixth inning to make it 4-1. The Yankees got on the board on Swisher's RBI single off Haren in the fourth inning. NOTES: The Angels placed right-hander Jered Weaver on the 15-day disabled list because of a lower back strain and back spasms suffered in the first inning of Monday's win over the Yankees, though it is unclear just how long Weaver will be out. "It's significant enough that it's going to be a couple of weeks, but there's no timetable for something like this," Scioscia said. ... Right-hander Garrett Richards was recalled from Salt Lake to take Weaver's spot on the Angels' roster. ... The Yankees claimed right-hander Ryota Igarashi off waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday. Igarashi, 33, allowed four runs in one inning over two games before getting designated for assignment by Toronto on Sunday. "I don't think we would have signed him if we didn't think he would contribute," said manager Joe Girardi. ... Angels outfielder Torii Hunter was activated from the restricted list after missing 16 games. He had spent time with his family after the arrest of one of his teenage sons in connection with a sexual-assault investigation at a Dallas-area high school. Infielder Andrew Romine was optioned to Salt Lake after a five-day major league stint in which he didn't get into a game.
