Even though the Angels surrendered prospects Jean Segura, Ariel Pena and Johnny Hellweg to the Brewers for right handed pitcher Zack Greinke, it is still unknown if he'll be with the Angels after this season. According to Alden Gonzalez of MLB.com, the Angels “would like nothing more than to sign” Greinke to a long-term deal instead of losing him in free agency, but so far, there's no offer for Greinke on the table. “For us to think too far ahead at this point would be getting too far ahead of ourselves, rather than just allowing the cart to rest in back of the horse and watch this for a while,” General Manager Jerry Dipoto said. “We feel like Zack's going to make a tremendous impact, and we'll cross the bridge of pending free agency and where we go from there when we reach it.” Before Greinke was traded, the Brewers apparently offered him a $100-million-plus, five-year deal, but he rejected the offer. Back in April, I speculated that Greinke could pull off a Matt Cain's type deal ($112.5 million over five years), but maybe he wants a Cole Hamels' type deal ($144 million over six years) although I don't think that's the case. I believe that if the Angels want to keep him around they have the money to do it. As Gonzalez points out, the Angels “will have money coming off the books” this off season. Bobby Abreu ($9 million) and Torii Hunter ($18 million) will be off the Angels payroll (although Abreu is apparently free agency-bound for the second time this year), and they could also decline Dan Haren's $15.5 million option and/or Ervin Santana's $13 million option for 2013. This should create enough payroll flexibility for Greinke. The 28-year old right hander is 9-4 with a 3.39 ERA, 0.5 HR/9, 2.0 BB/9 and 9.0 SO/9 in 130.0 innings with the Angels and Brewers this season.
