The Los Angeles Angels appear to be targeting Ryan Madson to help the back end of their bullpen, Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com. The Phillies were also interested in a reunion, but negotiations with the Angels (possibly the amount of money) have moved to the point where a return to the Phillies does not appear likely. Madson signed a one-year deal worth $8.5mm with the Reds last offseason, but did not throw a pitch during the regular season for them as he under went Tommy John surgery. Madson initially had a four-year $44mm verbally agree upon with the Phillies which eventually fell apart. Both sides pointed the finger at each other which could be also be a reason why a reunion is out of the question. Madson at that time was coming off his best season where he had 32 saves and a 2.37 ERA in 62 relief appearances for the Phillies. Madson would be a solid pickup for the Angels but will be a question mark as he returns from Tommy John surgery and won't be ready to start the season. My guess, Madson will want close to $5mm in guaranteed money and will want a role in the back of the bullpen if not a closing role.
