NASHVILLE -- The Angels fortified their bullpen Wednesday, agreeing to terms on a two-year deal at about 8 million with veteran left-hander Sean Burnett, said Jim Munsey, Burnett's agent. The deal, which is pending a physical, includes an option for a third year at 4.5 million that can be bought out at 500,000.
Burnett was 1-2 with a 2.38 earned-run average in 70 games, striking out 57, walking 12 and giving up four home runs in 56 23 innings for the Washington Nationals last season. He had surgery after the season to remove bone spurs from his elbow but is expected to be ready for spring training.
The 30-year-old, who complements a sinking 90-mph fastball with a slider and changeup, fills a bullpen void left by Fridays trade of right-hander Jordan Walden for Atlanta starter Tommy Hanson.
Burnett, who has been more of a left-handed specialist, joins what should be a much deeper and more talented Angels bullpen headed by new closer Ryan Madson, Ernesto Frieri, Kevin Jepsen and Scott Downs.
He will also be a natural replacement for Downs, the 36-year-old left-hander who is entering the final year of a three-year, 15-million contract.

The ill-advised "mutli-year contracts to relievers" train continued to roll along on Wednesday, with the Angels signing Sean Burnett (last of the Nationals) to a two-year, $8 million deal and the Cardinals signing Randy Choate (last of the Dodgers) to a three-year, $7.5 million deal.
Both of these relievers owe Brandon League and Jonathan Broxton a fistbump for setting...
NASHVILLE Jerry Dipoto will never say never, because an opportunity might arise or Angels owner Arte Moreno might hand him the equivalent of a blank check to pursue a player like he did with Albert Pujols last winter.
But based on the general manager's actions over the past 10 days and his comments as he left the winter meetings Thursday, it is clear that pitcher Zack Greinke...
Nationals sign Dan Haren to 1 year, $13 Million deal.
Up above, video of Davey Johnson and Mike Rizzo talking about the Dan Haren signing, via CSNWashington.com. Video is here, also.
Davey: "I like his stuff. I like his competitiveness....I think he'll be one of the leaders on the staff"Rizzo: "We have a good core of four young starters, and a really...
Well that was an exciting yet ultimately disappointing Winter Meetings, wasn't it? Sure the Angels made a few moves and more or less locked in their roster for the season, but they kind of forgot to bring in that one big piece that was going to make it all worthwhile, that would be a Mr. Zack Greinke.
Maybe I'm being presumptive, but with the money and roster spot they...

A person familiar with the talks tells The Associated Press that free agent pitcher Dan Haren and the Washington Nationals are close to completing a one-year deal for $13 million.
The person spoke Tuesday at the baseball winter meetings under condition of anonymity because the deal wasn't finalized.
The Nationals had the best record in the majors last season. The NL East champions...
When the Angels allowed Dan Haren to walk away for nothing, the immediate speculation was that he’d look to stay on the West Coast. There seemed to be a natural fit with the Padres, and though there were lingering questions regarding Haren’s health, it was clear he was going to get a shot somewhere, and it was clear he was going to be in some sort of demand. Haren seems to have...

So all the exciting Winter Meetings deals are gonna come on the last day? It's like Frank and Zach from MTV's Challenge have taken over the Winter Meetings and ruined them too. Give me back Evan and Kenny and CT! In the words of T.J. Lavin, they killed it! Sorry, I didn't have any balloons set up to fall when Sean Burnett signed a deal. Maybe Greinke will finally...
