Kendrys Morales led off Los Angeles' two-run 10th inning with a solo homer, and the Angels completed a three-game sweep of Boston by outlasting the Red Sox 14-13 on Thursday night. The Red Sox wasted a 6-0 lead then rallied from deficits of 8-7 in the sixth and 12-11 in the ninth. But closer Alfredo Aceves struggled after Boston was one out away from victory in the ninth. Aceves (2-8) gave up five runs and six hits in one inning, and the Red Sox lost for the 11th time in 15 games. Ernesto Frieri (2-0) got the win after giving up a tying solo homer in the ninth to Cody Ross, his 19th of the season, and an RBI single in the 10th to Dustin Pedroia, who drove in five runs. Frieri was charged with a blown save, but secured the win when he struck out Adrian Gonzalez to end the 4-hour, 34-minute game.

Adrian Gonzalez, Carl Crawford, Josh Beckett Trade Is Statement of Its Own for Red Sox, No Matter the Results

The sentiment for the 2012 Red Sox (and really, the end-of-2011 Red Sox as well) was never that this team lacked the pieces to win. From proven bats to fiery starters, Boston was loaded with talent, and it had young help waiting to come up, too. The problem throughout the much-maligned last September, creeping into this year and dragging the team down hard as the summer went on,...

Deal With Dodgers May Save Red Sox Money, But Cost of Trading Away Key Pieces Will Hurt

Editor's note: NESN.com is going to tell the story of the 2012 Red Sox in Bobby Valentine's words. Each game day, we will select the best Valentine quote that sums up the day for the Red Sox. When the dust settles -- if it does -- this will be the game when the Red Sox turned the page. Trading away $270 million worth of contracts will do that for a team, after all. There...

Franklin Morales Gets Another Chance to Prove Himself as Starter Against Team That Isn't New York (Video)

As long as Franklin Morales isn't playing the Yankees, he's been solid. It's good news, then, that the Red Sox aren't playing the Yankees on Thursday night. Instead, Morales will face the Angels in the hopes of avoiding a sweep and continuing to build his resume as a starter for the Red Sox. The Halos are still a pretty good team, though, so he will have his work...

Bobby Valentine Believes Franklin Morales Has 'What it Takes' to Be a Full-Time Starter in the Future

BOSTON –– Despite two subpar starts against the Yankees, Franklin Morales has been exceptional as a starter. In eight starts this season, the left-hander has posted a 3-3 record with a 3.98 ERA. Since the Red Sox are slipping out of playoff contention, the team could be evaluating his starting prospects moving forward. As far as Red Sox skipper Bobby Valentine is concerned, Morales...

Adrian Gonzalez Beginning to Cool Down as Angels' Mike Trout Stays Red Hot

Editor's note: The temperature gauge is a Bill James-created statistic that measures how hot or cold hitters are. We will spotlight Red Sox and opposing team temperatures on game days. Not long ago, Adrian Gonzalez was one of the hottest hitters on the planet, winning an MLB Player of the Week award and leading the Red Sox offense in the absence of David Ortiz. Well, Gonzalez...

Gonzalez and Beckett Claimed By L.A.

It now rests in the hands of Red Sox upper management where two of their star players will ultimately end up. According to a report from ESPN ScoreCenter, both first baseman Adrian Gonzalez and pitcher Josh Beckett were claimed off waivers by the Los Angeles Dodgers, leaving the Sox to either trade them, allow them to leave, or retain them. They are also apparently trying to shop...

2012 Boston Red Sox Magic Numbers

I think it's very important that we count down the Boston Red Sox Magic Numbers for playoff elimination. This will be calculated periodically based on their distance between the AL East leader and the #2 Wild Card leader. 8/24: Current Red Sox Record 59-66 AL East Magic Number: 25 (New York Yankees 72-52) Wildcard #2 Magic Number: 30 (Tigers/A's/Orioles 67-57)

Sox Get A Win Amid Trade Talk

While everyone was talking about the blockbuster trade and if and when it was going to happen, the Red Sox took the mound and actually ended their losing streak.  Jon Lester took the mound for the Sox and there was the much needed return of David Ortiz.   Lester took the mound and hoped to build on his last few outings.  Lester was given a couple of runs in the bottom of the...

Whirlwind of Rumors, Emotions Making It Very Difficult to Remain Focused on Game at Hand (Video)

Crazy enough for you? As if the Red Sox' extra-inning loss on Thursday night wasn't enough, the team has continued to surprise, with the rumor of a blockbuster deal looming. While Adrian Gonzalez, Josh Beckett and Carl Crawford are still in Boston uniforms for the start of Friday's game, anything's possible right now. NESN Nation's Dan Duquette is trying to hold...

Yankeetorial: And so we close the book on the great Yankee-Boston rivalry of the early New Millenium (and Lackey cries, what about me?)

Oh, well... so much for the Greatest Team Evah.I feel like the mutt reporter in the final moments of "King Kong." A kid points to the gorilla on the sidewalk, and I say, "It wasn't them planes that killed the beast. T'was beauty that killed the beast." No, I'm not saying Carl Crawford is pretty. The word is hubris, folks. Hubris. Whenever the dictator...

Angels top Red Sox; Pujols exits early

Jered Weaver rebounded from a terrible start by pitching seven solid innings, and the Los Angeles Angels beat the fading Boston Red Sox 7-3 on Wednesday night. Howie Kendrick hit a solo homer and Torii Hunter had a two-run single for the Angels, who have won the first two in a three-game set at Boston after getting swept in a four-game home series against Tampa Bay over the weekend...

We All LOVE NESN’s Jenny Dell AKA The Baconator, But This Is DOWNRIGHT CREEPY (VIDEO)

NESN’s Jenny Dell has been the LONE BRIGHT SPOT in this LOST Red Sox season. “The Baconator” has maintained a POSITIVE attitude and continues to flash that MILLION DOLLAR smile game after MEANINGLESS game. She has made EVERYONE forget about Heidi What’s Her Name. But some fans’ INFATUATION has bordered on CREEPY and DOWNRIGHT STALKERISH. EXHIBIT A: First off, the still...

Dodgers, Red Sox Close To Multi-Player Blockbuster

The Los Angeles Dodgers and Boston Red Sox are close to completing to completing a deal that would send Adrian Gonzalez to the Dodgers, according to multiple sources. There are two proposed mega deals on the table right now, things are serious, and a deal could be done today. The first proposed deal would send Josh Beckett and Adrian Gonzalez to the Dodgers. The other is a reported...

Dodgers and Red Sox working on Gonzalez, Beckett, Crawford deal

Have Angels regained their momentum?

Where were these guys last week? Or, for that matter, the week before that? The Angels team that defeated the Boston Red Sox for a second time in two days bears no resemblance to the team that fumbled through the first 19 days of this month. This team looks more like the one Angels fans saw in May and June and part of July. Perhaps most significant, right-hander Jered Weaver looked...
