It looked like the Pirates were ready to build some momentum coming off an encouraging victory on Sunday, but they weren’t able to sustain their early surge and fell right back in to their giant offensive slump.

The Bucs jumped out to a quick lead in the first, but were only able to score once on three hits and a walk. Joe Saunders was not sharp early on, but Neil Walker‘s RBI single up the middle drove in the only run and Josh Harrison left the bases loaded.

Despite stranding runners, you’d think that a good start and a shaky opponent would mean the Pirates would score some more in the later innings. Nope. The Pirates managed only three more hits the rest of the way, and looked like the generally incompetent group we’ve become accustomed to watching over the last week or so.

Erik Bedard didn’t have his best control – he was falling behind hitters often and missed on several pitches by alarming amounts. Aaron Hill took him deep in the first to tie things up, and the DBacks would threaten him a few more times. Bedard worked his way out of trouble for the most part, but allowed a frustrating run in the fourth on two 2-out walks and an RBI single to the #8 hitter. That put Arizona up 2-1.

Bedard tossed a scoreless 5th, but Evan Meek was called upon to work the sixth. Again, Meek looked nothing like the “old Meek”, and immediately allowed a sharp single and a Chris Young homer to make it 4-1 and essentially end the game. Chris Resop allowed a solo shot in the seventh to make it 5-1.

It wasn’t the greatest performance by the pitching staff, but it was another awful performance by the offense. After the first, the only hits were an Alex Presley bunt single, a Rod Barajas double (which was awesome), and a single by Bedard. The Pirates drew only one more walk after Saunders was all over the place in the first. Six of the nine position players that appeared in the game are hitting below .200. It’s bad.

DBacks 5, Pirates 1 / Box / 2012 Record: 3-7 / Next: Tuesday, at DBacks, 9:40

MVP: Walker (+.078) / LVP: Meek (-.153) / Key play: Young’s homer
