February posts are supposed to be about Spring Training, not the Hall of Fame.
Yet the Hall of Fame debate rages longer for baseball than any other sport. Joe Posnanski recently discussed the Hall of Fame chances for current free agent Johnny Damon. For many casual fans Johnny Damon will be remembered as a solid major league player for a number of years, who at times in his career made cameos both as an idiot and as Judas.
Maybe it’s the baseball community’s affinity for sabermetrics, but Johnny Damon is closer to 3,000 career hits (currently 2,723) that it seems many fans realize. If he can string together two more seasons with approximately 500 plate appearances each (he has 600+ PAs in his last 14 seasons) Damon has an excellent shot at reaching 3,000 career hits. Though many fans now value counting statistics much less than in the past, 3,000 hits generally puts anyone near the top of a serious Hall of Fame discussion.
