Norichika Aoki hit a leadoff homer, Khris Davis connected three batters later and Yovani Gallardo pitched the Milwaukee Brewers to a 4-2 victory over the New York Mets on Friday night.
Martin Maldonado also homered and Gallardo (12-10) went six innings to end his inconsistent season with a win. The right-hander, who won 33 games over the previous two years, finished 4-1 in eight starts since returning from a strained left hamstring.
The fourth-place Brewers are closing strong, too. They have won three straight and five of six, giving them nine victories in their last 10 road games against New York.
The punchless Mets played without All-Star third baseman David Wright, who sat out with a sore right thumb, and lost 4-2 to Milwaukee for the second consecutive night.
Jim Henderson pitched a perfect ninth for his 28th save in 32 tries.
Wright was sidelined one night after he was hit in the helmet by an 86 mph changeup. The Mets reiterated that Wright's head is fine - he said he ...
BEST OF MAXIM
As July came to a close, the Milwaukee Brewers had serious questions whether Yovani Gallardo was going to ever regain form as the consistent pitcher he had been for most of his six seasons in the big leagues.
An injury is never a good thing, but Gallardo's hamstring strain and the subsequent time on the disabled list completely turned his season around. Making his final start...
The Milwaukee Brewers seem to enjoy facing the New York Mets on the road.
Having Carlos Gomez back may keep it that way.
Gomez is scheduled to return from his suspension Friday night when the Brewers attempt to continue their success at Citi Field.
Milwaukee (72-87) has won eight of nine visits to Flushing after taking the opener of this four-game set 4-2 on Thursday.
MILWAUKEE -- Milwaukee Brewers manager Ron Roenicke and his entire coaching staff will return for the 2014 season, general manager Doug Melvin announced Saturday.
Roenicke, who recently won his 250th game as Milwaukee's manager, will be back to lead the Brewers for a fourth season.
"While this season has not been what we had hoped, I believe the continuity with Ron Roenicke...
The Milwaukee Brewers' best hitter this season was young rookie shortstop Jean Segura. The Brewers acquired him last year when they traded Zack Grienke to the Angels and he has definitely lived up to expectations. He actually has played better than he was expected to and the Brewers will try to reward him for it.
The Milwaukee Brewers will reach out to Jean Segura's representatives...
Milwaukee Brewers center fielder Carlos Gomez has been suspended for one game and fined an undisclosed amount for his role in the benches-clearing incident between the Brewers and Braves on Wednesday night.
Gomez will serve his suspension Friday night against the New York Mets. He was originally in Milwaukee's lineup for the series opener at Citi Field but was scratched as...
Never underestimate the importance of a player — even a proven veteran player — going home feeling good about himself at the end of a tumultuous season.
Yovani Gallardo was able to exit with a smile after putting the capper on a late-season push Friday night with six strong innings as the Milwaukee Brewers again beat the New York Mets 4-2 at Citi Field.
When Gallardo went on...
Brian McCann got more than his share of air time in the 24 hours after his nose-to-nose confrontation with Brewers outfielder Carlos Gomez that fueled a benches-clearing fracas Wednesday night.
McCann is featured mask up eyes blazing and shouting at Gomez in countless photos from multiple angles and a myriad of video replays. McCann has had his actions analyzed by broadcasters who...
It's unknown if the Milwaukee Brewers will have their leading home run hitter for the opener to the final series of this season.
With Carlos Gomez potentially facing a suspension, the Brewers will try to spoil the New York Mets' return from a successful road trip Thursday night.
Gomez's first-inning homer - his 23rd of the season - got Milwaukee (71-87) started toward...
While it was initially thought that there were no injuries arising out of Wednesday's benches-clearing fracas between the Atlanta Braves and the Milwaukee Brewers, that is not actually the case. Aramis Ramirez re-injured his problematic right knee during the scuffle.
According to Adam McCalvy of MLB.com, Ramirez hopes that the injury won't officially end his 2013 season...
Carlos Gomez’s home run reaction caused a benches clearing confrontation against the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday night.
Warning: Be prepared for an angry rant about a stupid decision from a not-so-smart baseball player. Before reading this, make sure to watch the video (courtesy of mlb.com) of what happened.
The Brewers' Carlos Gomez and the Braves' Reed Johnson have each been suspended one game after a benches-clearing argument between their teams.
Both were also fined an undisclosed amount Thursday.
In the top of the first inning Wednesday in Atlanta, Gomez homered off Paul Maholm, still furious the Braves starter hit him with a pitch three months earlier.
Gomez stood in...
Johnny Hellweg didn't help his cause or his BB/9 but the Brewers win anyway.
Johnny Hellweg just didn't have it tonight. I know the box score says he only gave up one run but trust me he did not have it. There is a reason Alfredo Figaro was credited for the win and that reason is because Hellweg was lifted after 4 innings and 80 pitches only 37 of those strikes. He hit David...
Ben and Sam discuss Mariano Rivera`s farewell, Carlos Gomez`s suspension, and Bud Selig`s legacy.
It’s fan appreciation night and Oktoberfest at Citi Field tonight as the race for a protected pick hits the home stretch. The Mets will be giving away a Das Boot Glass. I see no ways that could go wrong. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m.
