A person familiar with the trade says the Philadelphia Phillies have acquired seven-time All-Star infielder Michael Young from the Texas Rangers for two relief pitchers. Young agreed to waive his no-trade clause on Saturday, the person said, speaking on condition of anonymity because the deal hasn't been announced. The Phillies are sending right-hander Josh Lindblom and minor league righty Lisalverto Bonilla to the Rangers to get Young, who fills a void at third base. The Rangers also will pay a significant portion of Young's salary for 2013. Young is due to earn $16 million. Reports say the Phillies will pay him about $6 million. Young batted .277 with eight homers and 67 RBIs in 2012, a down year for him. In the nine previous seasons, Young hit at least .300 seven times and averaged 17 homers and 90 RBIs. A former AL Gold Glove winner at shortstop, Young hasn't play third base regularly since 2010. Seven Phillies started at third base last year, including often-injured former All-Star Placido Polanco.

Five reasons why Michael Young will bounce back with the Phillies

Rangers fans are left this week pondering the mixed legacy of their now departed Michael Young. As a legacy member of that team, Young had produced far more positive moments for the Rangers than the other way around. But his contract--which is not his fault--combined with two episodes of whining at position changes despite that contract--which is his fault--led to a falloff of some...

Michael Young Traded to Philadelphia Phillies

Michael Young has spent his entire career with the Texas Rangers.  However, the last two seasons have been tenuous.  The Rangers asked Young to move positions numerous times and he has wanted a contract extension.  The extension never came, and now the Rangers have dealt him to the Philadelphia Phillies. The trade was not without Young's consent though.  Young had 10...

Michael Young a Good Bet for Philadelphia

The Phillies have a hole at third base, and Michael Young is a man without a position in Texas. These two problems look to be coalescing into a trade between the Rangers and Phillies, where Texas would ship Young to Philadelphia in order to give him the chance to have a regular gig again, and they’d receive a little bit of salary relief in the process. The Rangers would still...

Filling Young's shoes wont be easy for Rangers

Replacing Michael Young's production doesn't figure to be that difficult for the Texas Rangers. Any fan of WAR can tell you that Young was one of the worst players in the American League in 2012 when you look at his numbers (his -2.4 was a career worst). His average of .277 was his worst since 2002. His RBI total of 67 was dismal, especially considering he hit in the heart...

After two days weighing his options, the 36-year old lifetime Texas Ranger has decided to leave the only organization he has ever played for, waiving his no-trade option for a chance to play third base everyday with the Phillies. In exchange for Young, the Phillies will send back 25-year old right-handed reliever, Josh Lindblom, and Lisalverto...

Phillies Get Young

Adding veteran infielder Michael Young to the Phillies roster does not actually make the team younger, but it does fill the hole at third base. Young is owed $16 million in 2013 and the Rangers are reportedly picking up at least $10 million of that. The Phillies sent right-handed reliever Josh Lindblom and minor league pitcher, Lisalverto Bonilla to the Rangers. Lindblom had little...

Let The Phillies Get Older With Michael Young

There is an old adage in baseball that says pitching wins championships.  The San Francisco Giants can attest to that, as they’ve won two titles in three years on the strength of their stellar starting rotation and deep bullpen.  But while pitching wins titles, it’s youth that keeps teams playing for championships. After winning four World Series in five seasons from 1996 to...
