Last week, it was being reported that New York Yankees relief pitcher Joba Chamberlain, had a life-threatening ankle injury while playing with his son on a trampoline at a recreational center in Florida. According to Joba, that Was never the case. In fact, there was bone popping out, or massive amounts of blood loss, such as what the media had been reporting.

“One of those things that bothered me was people were calling me and asking me if it was life-threatening, and I was going to lose my foot,’’ he added. “It was a subtalar dislocation, that’s the bottom of your foot. There were no bones popping out of the skin, contrary to what people wrote. It wasn’t life threatening.’’

That is drastically different as to what many were being told. HIPPA laws protect the patience, so it is unlikely that the report came from the hospital itself. So who mislead the media? Was it the media that sensationalized the story itself to make it more dramatic?

Yankees GM Brian Cashman had spoken to the media once Joba had been in the hospital, and though he came across as worried and upset by what happened, he himself didn’t ever say that Joba’s life was in danger.

We haven’t had word of eyewitnesses from the incident, but if someone had seem the exposed heel of Joba, it is easy to see them overstate what they saw, or the media expanding on it, themselves. In any event, Chamberlain is now concentrating on getting back on the mound this season, and not worried about if he is going to die.

It is unfortunate the multiple media reports led all of us to believe that Chamberlain could have died, and rushed to report about gruesome injury that never quite happened. He did suffer a dislocation, but nearly to the extent that it was originally portrayed in the media.
