After hitting .227/.304/.377 in 252 plate appearances (85 games) this season, Mike Fontenot enters his third year of arbitration eligibility. Though the numbers — particularly the low batting average — don’t exactly jump off the page, he was quietly a solid producer at the plate. His walk rate (9.9%) was a notch above league average, and though he’s not much of a power hitter, he hit the ball with astonishing authority (44% of his hits going for extra bases). Despite missing 40+ games due to a groin strain and otherwise receiving limited playing time, Fontenot was good for roughly one win above replacement (by both rWAR and fWAR). Oddly enough, Fontenot — primarily a second baseman — spent the majority of his time at shortstop this season. He’s nothing special defensively — whether at second, short, or third, but he did demonstrate that he’s serviceable at both middle-infield positions (and even third base in a grind). Going by FRAA, he’s mostly been an average defender over his car...

Jon Paul Morosi of Fox Sports says the Mariners are willing to include cash in order to trade the under performing Chone Figgins. The Mariners are hoping that teams that need a leadoff hitter will engage them in trade talks. SF Giants Rumors: Congrats Coach Mike Matheny

It’s always nice to see an ex-Giants player making headlines. The Cardinals have announced that ex-Giants catcher Mike Matheny will replace Tony La Russa as the Cardinals manger. It’s a two-year deal, and a nice starting gig for a first time coach. The Cardinals are the 2011 World Series Champions, but I’m sure you already knew that!   Matheny’s career was cut short after...

Players and owners are close to finalizing a new labor deal that would bring significant changes to MLB, particularly when it comes to the draft. The general reaction is not positive, and for good reason. In other news… File...

Giants to Offer Lincecum Extension: Report

There's no question that pitching is the priority for the Giants this off-season, despite serious offensive woes in 2011. Brian Sabean has said as much, and the logic there centers around the need to lock up Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain for a longer period of time. According to Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated, the Giants are trying to do just that, and are going to "make...
