The Giants have placed relievers Jeremy Affeldt and Ramon Ramirez on the trading block, according to a report from FOX Sports reporter Ken Rosenthal.
Rosenthal figures that there are a lot of teams that need bullpen help and the Giants’ bullpen is not only full of talent, but getting costly. He does not cite any sources in his report, meaning it could just be more Rosenthal hyperbole.
Baseball’s annual winter meetings are set to take place in Dallas this weekend.
Ramirez, 30, will be a free agent at the end of next season. The arbitration-eligible righty is due to get a raise somewhere in the $2-$3 million range. He was a steady option out of Bruce Bochy’s bullpen last year, going 3-3 with a 2.62 ERA, 1.165 WHIP, 8.7 SO/9 rate, and 3.4 BB/9 rate in 66 relief appearances (68.2 innings pitched).
The Giants exercised the team’s option on Affeldt last month (much to the chagrin of a lot of Giants bloggers). The 32-year old southpaw was 3-2 last year with a 2.63 ERA, 1.151 WHIP, 7.9 SO/9 rate, and 3.5 BB/9 rate in 67 relief appearances (61.2 innings pitched).
In a conference call with reporters yesterday, Giants CEO Larry Baer confirmed that the team’s payroll would be around $130 million.
