I want to preface this with the fact that it is a rumor. Also, half of what Charlie Gasparino says sounds like BS.

In typical Fox fashion, they are reporting something that is just a rumor as "Breaking News". They are reporting that current Red Sox ownership may be speculating a sale of the franchise at an estimate of $1.3 Billion. Chump change.

The owners of the Boston Red Sox are mulling a potential sale of the storied baseball franchise, and have even begun quietly shopping the team to potential buyers, the FOX Business Network has learned.

[...]

The Red Sox have publicly denied that they are for sale. Reached Thursday, a spokesperson for the team said of the potential sale that “there is no truth to that rumor.” However, there has been talk for some time that the team is informally gauging interest in the club.

The price tag eyed for any potential sale would be a steep one, according to people who have spoke with Red Sox management: $1.3 billion. Forbes cites the value of the Red Sox at around $1 billion.

Financier John Henry is the principle owner of Fenway Sports, which bought the Red Sox in 2002 and produced immediate results, winning the World Series in 2004 and 2007. But the last two seasons have been dismal ones for the team, plagued by injuries and overpaid talent.

Speculation or not, could the sale of the Boston Red Sox be a terrible thing for the team? Maybe? The downfall would be an ownership group that cheap and is not as open to spending money of free agents. Or, the Sox could  get an ownership group that is open to spending and will change the entire dynamic of the front office. This could play out like the Dodgers trade where they said they are pulling Gonzo off of waivers, then he is gone hours later. If someone comes in and makes them an appealing offer, I'm sure they would listen. I am also sick of the talk that the team is more interested in Liverpool. If it is the case, they are still willing to spend on baseball, so it's fine with me.
