After the Los Angeles Dodgers clinched the National League West title on Thursday on the road against the Arizona Diamondbacks they celebrated by jumping in the pool at Chase Field. Not surprisingly, the Diamondbacks were not amused by the celebration. Diamondbacks president and CEO Derrick Hall said in a statement to the Arizona Republic, “I could call it disrespectful and classless, but they don’t have a beautiful pool at their old park and must have really wanted to see what one was like.” Personally, I love that Hall pulled the, “Oh they’re just jealous of our awesome pool” line. Classic. The Diamondbacks had asked the Dodgers to keep their players from returning to the field once the team began celebrating it’s division title. After winning the game 7-6, the Dodgers gathered around second base and celebrated before entering the clubhouse where the typical beer and champagne showers took place. But a few minutes later, the players burst out of the clubhouse and ran toward the pool beyond the right-center field wall. They scaled the wall and entered the pool area. According to Dodgers team president Stan Kasten, the team misunderstood the Diamondbacks request, thinking they were asking the team not to celebrate in front of Arizona’s fans. But once the stadium was mostly empty, the Dodgers thought they were safe to continue their party by the pool. Kasten added, “I’ve never been around a celebration like this that didn’t get excited and a little bit boisterous.” Diamondbacks infielder Willie Bloomquist was the most vocal critic of the Dodgers’ actions. He said, “I think it’s tired and disrespectful. It’s surprising, because they have a lot of veteran guys on that team that I thought were classier than that.” Nick Punto cannon-balled into the pool and Yasiel Puig later did a belly-flop. Frankly it was insanely disrespectful of the Dodgers to do that. If it was their home park, that’s one thing, but you can’t go making a place your own just because you won a division title. Would an opposing team slide down Bernie Brewer’s slide at Miller Park? Absolutely not. My question is, what is the unwritten rule as far as retaliation goes for a team jumping into your pool? Do the Diamondbacks now have to deface a Dodger Dog or something now? Maybe they can kidnap Vin Scully and send ransom notes like they would a high school mascot.
