Diamondbacks Central:
In continuing to trim their roster for Opening Day on Friday, the Diamondbacks placed infielder Tony Abreu on waivers, according to numerous sources. If Abreu is not picked up by another team within the next three days, the club could assign him to Triple A, trade him or give Abreu an outright release to seek employment elsewhere.
Placing Abreu on waivers bring an end to a very disappointing career in a D’Backs uniform. Brought over in the Jon Garland deal, Abreu was expected to be a future starter in the middle infield, but for some reason it never materalized. In his only season up with the big league club in 2010, the 26-year-old hit only .233 with one home run and 13 RBI. He struggled making contact striking out 47 times in 193 at-bats and walking only four times.
