The Miami Marlins won Wednesday’s game against the New York Mets 3-1 as Marlins’ pitchers continued to put up fantastic statistics.   Josh Johnson made the start and came away continuing to feel fine which is the best news of all for the Marlins.   A 54 minute rain delay came after Johnson’s time on the mound, it was the third delay already this Spring for the Marlins.

Johnson went three innings in which he allowed one run on five hits.    The tall right-hander struck out two and walked none in a no decision.   Heath Bell, Mike Dunn, Brad Hand and J.D. Martin combined for six shutout innings in which they allowed a total of three hits.   It’s been a daily occurrence to the staff put up similar numbers especially the arms in the bullpen.    While J.D. Martin is considered a longshot to make the team, he’s making an impression on the team which should give him an opportunity later in the year.  Hand was credited with the win, his second of the Spring by striking out one in his two innings on the mound.   Martin earned the save while striking out a batter of his own in two frames.

Jose Reyes faced his former team for the first time but only was able to get one at bat before the rain delay.    To play it safe, Reyes was removed when play resumed.    Chris Coghlan had a big day at the plate going 2-3 with two runs scored.   The Marlins played without a DH for the first time this Spring but no pitcher wound up taking an at bat in the game.    One of the interesting stories of the Spring has been Donovan Solano who entered Spring as a non-roster invitee but has opened many eyes with his performance.   Being given significant playing time thus far, Solano has done his most to make a case for a reserve infield spot.   While it remains likely the reserve infield spot will be given to Donnie Murphy, Solano has brought his name into the discussion.

Before the game, the Marlins made eight cuts.  Omar Poveda, and Chris Hatcher were optioned to New Orleans while Arquimedes Caminero was optioned to Jupiter.    Jose Alvarez, Corey Madden, A.J. Ramos, Rob Rasmussen, and Jacob Jefferies were re-assigned to minor league camp.

On Friday Mark Buehrle will make the start against the St. Louis Cardinals.   Going for the World Champions will be Jake Westbrook.
