The Cincinnati Reds had a fantastic year in 2012. Not only did they win the NL Central by nine games over the St. Louis Cardinals with their 97-65 record, they finished a game behind the Nationals for the best record in Major League Baseball. How did Dusty Baker get his club to such a high performance level after a disappointing 2011?
Joey Votto was a force in the lineup and on the field, but he missed significant time with a knee injury, leaving players like Brandon Phillips, Jay Bruce, and Ryan Ludwick to shoulder the load and carry the offense. However, with none of their major team offensive statistics falling within the top-10 of the league, it was their pitching that helped bring the squad to that next level. Their 3.34 team ERA and 1.23 team WHIP were both ranked within the top-five in all of baseball. For this, they can thank a starting rotation anchored by Johnny Cueto, Bronson Arroyo, Matt Latos, Homer Bailey, and Mike Leake. However, the key component of the pitching st...

The Reds tweeted on their official account that OF Chris Heisey and RHP Alfredo Simon have both agreed to one-year deals with the club for 2013. By doing so, they avoid having to go to arbitration, leaving Homer Bailey, Mat Latos, Mike Leake, and Shin-Soo Choo as the players left with whom the Reds have not yet come to terms.
Heisey signed for one year at $1.325 million, according...
After initially saying that he was going to retire earlier this offseason, former Cincinnati Reds third baseman Scott Rolen has done an about-face, and now wants to play in 2013. Rolen is apparently seeking a salary similar to the $6.5 million he made in 2012. The Reds would be hard-pressed to fit him in their payroll, let alone finding playing time for him with 2012 rookie standout...
For a guy who has played only 50 games above Class A, Billy Hamilton is very well known by Reds fans. After all, Hamilton set a professional record by stealing 155 bases last year. The fans want to see him in Cincinnati post haste. Instead, they'll have to travel 100 miles or so southwest to watch him this year. General manager Walt Jocketty told the Cincinnati Enquirer that...
The Cincinnati Reds agreed to contracts with right-hander Alfredo Simon and outfielder Chris Heisey, avoiding arbitration with both players. The moves leave the Reds with four unsigned arbitration eligible players in Homer Bailey, Shin-Soo Choo, Mat Latos and Mike Leake. Heisey had asked for $1.65 million, while the Reds offered $1.05 million. He agreed for $1.33 million, according...

The Cincinnati Reds have agreed to one-year contracts with outfielder Chris Heisey and right-hander Alfredo Simon, avoiding arbitration.
Heisey will make $1,325,000 and Simon will earn $890,000. The deals were announced by the Reds on Thursday.
The 28-year-old Heisey batted .265 with seven homers and 31 RBIs in 120 games for the Reds last season. It was a considerable drop-off...
Earlier this week when walking back to my house following a run in the unseasonably warm weather, I stopped by my lilac bush. It has buds on it. And my thoughts turned to baseball.
Today is the last day of January, and Spring Training will begin soon. Even now, the Reds are sprouting with activity.

The Reds certainly didn't sit idle on this first day of February.

Spring training begins in a few days and Opening Day 2013 vs. the Angels is a little over eight weeks away. I’ve pondered a lot since the Reds fell to the Giants that crisp October afternoon. On this first weekend of February, I’m just wonderin’…..
….if there’s a football game this Sunday? The media seems a little quiet about it....
The Cincinnati Reds signed catcher Miguel Olivo to a minor-league contract with an invitation to their major-league spring training camp. Financial terms of the deal weren't disclosed Friday. Olivo, 34, played in 87 games for the Seattle Mariners last season and hit .222 with 12 home runs and 29 RBI. He has 141 career home runs. Olivo likely would be competing with 24-year...
The Cincinnati Reds signed left-handed pitcher Manny Parra to a one-year deal and designated right-hander Todd Redmond for assignment Friday. The move was made to make room for Parra on the 40-man roster. His deal is worth $1 million but he could make another $400,000 in bonuses, according to MLB.com. Parra was 2-3 with 5.06 ERA last year for the Milwaukee Brewers. Since Aroldis...
Coming into the 2012 season hardly anyone had heard of Pedro Diaz. He was coming off of a season in the Dominican Summer League where he showed iffy control, but posted a strong ERA and limited hits working out of the bullpen as an 18-year-old. There was some buzz about him in spring training though as he showed off a strong arm.
The Reds assigned Diaz to the Arizona League Reds...
