Yesterday afternoon, the 2012 National League Cy-Young Award winner R.A. Dickey reached an agreement with the Toronto Blue Jays on a two-year, $25 million extension allowing the Jays and the New York Mets to complete their seven-player deal.  With word of the deal breaking over the weekend, many Mets fans had plenty of time to voice their opinions on Twitter, FaceBook, and through the airwaves; be it on WFAN or ESPN Radio. From what I can gather most are fine with the deal. While they will miss rooting for — and watching Dickey’s dancing knuckler — they understand what this deal means to the future of the organization.  Here on MetsZilla, we wanted to take a look around the web and see what some in the ‘industry’ are saying about the deal between the Mets and the Jays: Talent evaluators have told Buster Olney of ESPN.com, Blue Jays GM Alex Anthopoulos is “out of his mind” to make this trade with the Mets: Photo by MIchael G. Baron Talent evaluators who have heard Toronto Blue Jays GM Alex Anthopoulos say no to possible deals for catching prospect Travis d’Arnaud in the past are stunned — completely shocked — that Toronto has said yes to a to a trade for R.A. Dickey — a trade that is on the verge of being finalized with word that Dickey and the Jays have agreed to a two-year, $25 million contract extension. There’s even more to this deal than d’Arnaud: Noah Snydergaard, regarded as the Jays’ best pitching prospect by some teams, is the cherry on top of this trade for the Mets. “I can’t believe [Anthopoulos is] thinking about doing this,” one AL official said Saturday, before the Jays and Mets finished the structure of the deal. “He’s out of his mind,” said another.” Mike Vaccaro of the New York Post says, the Mets did the right thing: “I think the Mets did the right thing. They got maximum value for a guy that is 38-years-old, who clearly has more yesterday’s then tomorrow’s in his career. They did it for a kid catcher who, if he’s even half the player he’s projected to be right now, it’s going to whined up beinga win for the Mets.” In the Daily News, Bill Madden compares the trade of d’Arnaud to the deal Frank Cashen made for Gary Carter in the early 80′s, writing: “Nobody had to tell Sandy Alderson that this was going to be the defining trade of his administration as the anointed, hoped-for savior of the Madoff-mired Mets. This was – for all intents and purposes — his Gary Carter trade. …It remains to be seen if d’Arnaud will become  the All-Star catcher the scouts all seem to think he’s capable of being. But from Alderson’s standpoint, on potential alone, with this deal he was able to maximize Dickey’s trade value. Mets fans can only hope now that history will eventually repeat itself and d’Arnaud turns out to be a cornerstone of a championship team, as Carter did. Then it will truly have been Alderson’s defining trade.“ Anthony Reiber of Newsday believes Sandy Alderson was wise to make this deal: “Did the Mets make themselves better by trading Dickey and catchers Josh Thole and Mike Nickeas to the Blue Jays for catching prospect Travis d’Arnaud, pitching prospect Noah Syndergaard, catcher John Buck and outfield prospect Wuilmer Becerra? No one knows. Not for sure, anyway. We have to see the young talent during the next few years in Mets blue and orange. But it is a gamble general manager Sandy Alderson is wise to take. …The Mets probably were going to trade him anyway. Because it was the right thing for them to do. Really, it was the only thing for them to do.” #bbpBox_280272133769293824 a { text-decoration:none; color:#009999; }#bbpBox_280272133769293824 a:hover { text-decoration:underline; } The broad perception in the industry is that if the Mets pull this discussed Dickey deal for d’Arnaud, it’s an incredible trade for them.
