In hindsight, Bronson Arroyo probably should have thrown the sinker. Justin Maxwell hit a curveball out for a two-run home run Sunday off Arroyo in the seventh inning of the Reds' 5-3 loss to Houston. "It was a back and forth between me and (catcher Ryan) Hanigan," Arroyo said. "I wanted to go sinker in. He wanted me to throw a sweeping breaking ball. I knew he didn't want me to throw the sinker. It was breaking ball. It was wasn't the sweeping one. It was 12-6. It stayed over the middle of the plate." The Reds have scored a total of six runs in Arroyo's last four starts. He knew he couldn't afford to give up more when Maxwell came up with one out in the seventh and the Astros ahead 3-2. "Those are the chess-match battles that go on when you don't have unbelievable stuff," Arroyo said. "It's a head game. You try to figure it out quickly and on the spot.
