The Oakland Athletics have obtained catcher George Kottaras from the Milwaukee Brewers in a trade for minor league reliever Fautino De Los Santos. The deal was announced Sunday, shortly before the Athletics faced the Orioles in the finale of a three-game series. The 29-year-old Kottaras will join the A's in Oakland on Monday. Kottaras hit .209 with three homers and 12 RBIs in 58 games with Milwaukee this season. He was designated for assignment on Thursday to make room for catcher Jonathan Lucroy. De Los Santos spent most of the year at Triple-A Sacramento, where he was 1-3 with a 7.25 ERA in 28 relief appearances. The right-hander began the season on Oakland's opening day roster and had a 3.00 ERA in six games before being optioned on April 24.

Trade of Kottaras nets reliever for Brewers

MILWAUKEE After a day in which the Milwaukee Brewers latest trade hung in limbo, the team announced Sunday that backup catcher George Kottaras has officially been dealt to the Oakland Athletics in exchange for right-hander reliever Fautino De Los Santos. Given 10 days to deal Kottaras after the team designated him for assignment Thursday, general manager Doug Melvin said he intended...

Brewers designated Kottaras for assignment last week. Kottaras, 29, hit .209/.409/.360 with 3 HR's, 12 RBI's and a 108 OPS+ in 116 plate appearances with the Brewers in 2012. Image by...

Welcome to Off Topic Week

Do I know how to plan a week to not talk about the Brewers or what? After the Brewers just went 1-9 over their last ten games and traded away one of their most reliable players there is pretty much nothing I'd like to write about less than the Brewers right now. (Especially after Sunday's game. Jeesh.) Yes, I still think that 2013 is going be awesome and we'll return...

Norichika Aoki gets infield single after ground ball hits rosin bag (Video)

Milwaukee Brewers right fielder Norichika Aoki got an infield single on what should have been a double play ball during Saturday's game against the Washington Nationals after his ground ball up the middle hit a rosin bag in the back of the pitcher's mound. Your browser does not support iframes. It happened in the bottom of the third inning with one out and a runner...

Melvin’s Euphoria: Kottaras to Oakland

The Brewers designed backup catcher George Kottaras for assignment last week, and he has now been traded to the As for longtime minor league reliever Fautino De Los Santos. Oakland manager Bob Melvin sounds totally pumped: I really don’t know much about him… I’ve seen some of the numbers, and know he has a high on-base (percentage) for a guy that’s hitting 200-something....

Brewers seek redemption against lowly Astros

There are still two months left in the season, but the Milwaukee Brewers aren't giving any indication that they're going to make a move up the standings. The Houston Astros' recent bevy of moves show they're certainly looking toward 2013. Milwaukee will try to avoid a 10th loss in 11 games Monday night at Miller Park while the major league-worst Astros look to win...

Brewers fire bullpen coach

The Brewers fired bullpen coach Stan Kyles and promoted minor league pitching coordinator Lee Tunnell. Kyles had been with the team in that role since 2009. "It is important that we make every effort to try to improve our bullpen performance," Brewers general manager Doug Melvin said in a statement. "While Stan is not solely responsible, I felt that this change...

Nineteen months of Greinke worth the price

MILWAUKEE A framed picture hangs at the end of a long back hallway in the Milwaukee Brewers press box. It's a picture of ace pitcher Zack Greinke, and on the surface, it seems very much like the other posed photographs in this hallway. It's a typical picture of Greinke, if there is such a thing -- the pitcher deeply, yet blankly, glaring at the camera. But, on a deeper...

Brewers 8, Astros 7

Cody Ransom's homer capped a four-run burst in the eighth inning and the Milwaukee Brewers, after firing their bullpen coach, held off the Houston Astros 8-7 Monday night. The Brewers dismissed Stan Kyles before the game, then watched their shaky relievers barely preserve this victory. Milwaukee scored four times in the seventh for a 4-3 edge, but the Astros tied it in the...

Three umps in arguments at same time

A play in the sixth inning of the Milwaukee Brewers' game against the Washington Nationals on Sunday resulted in three of the four umpires involved in separate arguments at the same time. The Brewers led, 3-2, and had the bases loaded with one out when Norichika Aoki laid down a squeeze bunt that was fielded by Washington starter Gio Gonzalez. Gonzalez made a quick, off-target...

Nats' Morse hits tying HR, go-ahead double in 11th

Michael Morse hit a tying, two-run homer in the ninth inning, then delivered a two-run double in the 11th that sent the Washington Nationals over the Milwaukee Brewers 11-10 on Sunday. Bryce Harper drew a leadoff walk from Jose Veras (3-4) in the 11th and Ryan Zimmerman singled. One out later, Morse doubled down the left-field line for an 11-9 lead. Morse's homer with one out...

Brewers sign Humberto Quintero to a minor league deal

The Milwaukee Brewers signed veteran catcher Humberto Quintero to a Minor League deal according to a source close to Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports. Quintero, was released by the Royals earlier this month. The Royals acquired him from the Astros back in March, and hit only .232/.257/.341 with 1 HR, 19 RBI's and a 63 OPS+ in 144 plate appearances with the Royals in 2012. Image by...
