The Oakland Athletics activated shortstop Cliff Pennington from the 15-day disabled list on Tuesday. He had been out since July 20 because of left elbow tendinitis. Pennington was not in the starting lineup for the A's on Tuesday, however. He is hitting just .197 in 82 games, with three home runs and 16 RBIs. Plus, he was only 4-for-48 over his last 17 games. Pennington did well in his rehab assignment, hitting .455 (5-for-11) in three games for Triple-A Sacramento. To make room on the roster, Oakland optioned pitcher Pedro Figueroa to Sacramento, even though Figueroa pitched three scoreless innings in two appearances since his Sunday recall.
