The Oakland A’s offense battled late, but it wasn’t enough to overcome a tough start by Bartolo Colon, as the Athletics fell to the Houston Astros 5-4 in Game one of a three-game series.
The Houston offense didn’t hesitate to jump all over Colon, despite his All-Star season so far. Jason Castro walked to lead off the second inning, and after Matt Dominquez doubled, Brandon Barnes doubled them both home. The Astros would add on in the third inning, when Robbie Grossman and Brett Wallace lead off the inning with back-to-back singles. Jose Altuve lined out, allowing Grossman to move to third, and Grossman came in to score on a sacrifice fly by Castro. Christ Carter then doubled home Wallace to give Houston a 4-0 lead.
Despite their last-place status, the Astros added one more run in the fourth inning. Barnes led off with a double, L.J. Hoes singled to put Barnes at third base, and Barnes came home on a double play ground-out by Jonathan Villar to make it 5-0.
Even though he’s had a gre...

Stunned and somewhat upset A’s center fielder Chris Young waited for Robbie Grossman near second base late Wednesday night. The Bellaire High graduate wanted proof after the Astros’ rookie left fielder made a leaping grab at the wall to deny him a walk-off homer in the 10th inning.
Grossman was more than happy to oblige. He opened up his glove showed Young the ball and smiled...
Bartolo Colon's velocity was up but so was his fastball.
After four months of dominant outings and even talk of a possible run at another Cy Young Award, the 40-year-old Colon has looked extremely average in his last two outings.
Even the Houston Astros are knocking Oakland's All-Star right-hander around at this point.
Colon, who had defeated Houston three times already...
HOUSTON (AP) -- The fate of a plan to renovate the Houston Astrodome, an iconic stadium that's fallen into disrepair since it was shuttered four years ago, will be in the hands of voters this fall.
Harris County commissioners on Tuesday approved placing a measure on the Nov. 5 ballot that will ask voters to authorize up to 217 million in bonds to pay for a plan to turn the stadium...
The Astros have traded left-handed pitcher Travis Blackley to the Texas Rangers for a player to be named later and cash considerations the club announced in a news release today.
At the time of the transaction Blackley was on the Triple A Oklahoma City roster. He had been with the Astros since the start of the regular season before being designated for assignment on Aug. 8. Blackley...
Catcher can be a tough position to find production behind the plate. There are only so many Buster Poseys and Yadier Molinas available out there. Let's take a look at couple of young catchers that could be great finds. Jason Castro, Houston's lone All-Star, should be on most owners' peripheral. Yan Gomes is not a household name, but he could be real soon. Jason...
The A’s could not take advantage of Jarrod Parker going the deepest he’s gone into a baseball game in his career Wednesday night, as they lost their second straight game to the Astros.
In what turned out to be a pitcher’s duel between Parker and his newly-found near-namesake rival Jarred Cosart, Oakland could not come up with the big hit in a 2-1 11-inning loss that dropped...
After a three-and-three roadtrip, the Oakland A's return home for a nine-game set. The homestand begins with a three-game set against the Houston Astros. Chris Biderman previews the series.

Your browser does not support iframes. Texas Rangers stud pitcher Yu Darvish was at it again on Monday, striking out 15 Houston Astros and taking a no-hitter into the eighth inning of Texas’ 2-1 win at Minute Maid Park. The Minnesota Twins Andrew Albers is the new kid on the block making the most noise. The rookie has made 2 MLB starts, going 17.1 innings without allowing a run. To go along with his 0.00 ERA, he's also rocking a 0.40 WHIP. Nice!Chia-Jen Lo/Astros, Rob Wooten/Brewers, Luis Coleman/Royals, and Tanner Roark/Nationals have also acclimated well to the MLB uniform, allowing...
The Oakland Athletics lost sole possession of the AL West lead last week after one of Bartolo Colon's worst outings.
Now sitting in second place, the A's will try to regain the advantage with a series at home against a woeful Houston Astros team they've dominated. A healthier Colon might have a good chance to help Tuesday night, given his recent performances against...
