Have the A’s found their right-handed platoon option at first base?
The A’s announced on Saturday they have claimed first baseman Nate Freiman off waivers from the Astros.
Freiman, a 6-foot-8 (!!!!!!!!), 250-pound right-handed batter, hit .298/.370/.502 with 24 homers and 105 RBI in 137 games with the Padres’ Double-A affiliate last season. In 19 games this spring in Astros camp, he posted a .278 average with one home run and seven RBI.
Because the Astros acquired him from San Diego in the Rule 5 Draft after the 2012 season, Freiman, 26, must remain on the A’s big league roster for the entire season or be offered back to the Padres. Fernando Rodriguez, with a torn UCL in his throwing elbow, was placed on the 60-day DL to clear a roster spot for Freiman.
As opening day approaches, it’s been looking as if left handed-hitting Brandon Moss would be the team’s only true first baseman on the roster. With Freiman likely to be part of the team’s big league clubhouse during the season, it’s...

The projections for 2013 for the Houston Astros are all pretty grim. And that is understandable considering the team lost 107 games in 2012, have to switch leagues in 2013 and have a projected 2013 payroll of $14.6 million. Baseball Prospectus expects the team to lose 97 games in 2013. And any kind of optimism for the Astros to surprise anyone in the coming year would be supremely...
The Houston Astros signed shortstop Ronny Cedeno to a one-year contract Sunday and informed shortstop Tyler Greene he will not make the season-opening roster.
The 30-year-old Cedeno is an eight-year major league veteran who hit .259 in 78 games with the New York Mets last season. He is in the Astros' lineup for Sunday's exhibition game against the Miami Marlins.
The Houston Astros recently signed Ronny Cedeno and announced on Sunday that he will be the teams shortstop to open the season.
Cedeno spent almost all of spring training with the St. Louis Cardinals attempting to win the starting gig there when Rafael Furcal became sidelined. Pete Kozma earned the starting spot with the Cardinals while Cedeno was released.
The team is also looking...
Bud Norris' next start against major league hitters will be Houston's season opener against Texas.
The Astros right-hander threw six scoreless innings Friday in 3-2 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday. It came nine days before Norris is scheduled to open the season against the Rangers, one fewer day than the ideal number that would allow for two five-day breaks...
Ronny Cedeno tripled hours after signing with the Houston Astros, who beat the Miami Marlins 4-1 Sunday in a game shortened to 4 1-2 innings because of rain.
Released by St. Louis on March 19, Cedeno agreed to a one-year deal with Houston and immediately was inserted into the lineup at shortstop. He went 1 for 2, grounding into an inning-ending forceout in the second and tripling...
KISSIMMEE, Fla. (AP) -- Rick Ankiel had a tiebreaking sacrifice fly in the eighth inning to lead the Houston Astros to a 3-2 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday.
Ankiel pinch-hit for Brandon Barnes after Tyler Greene and Jose Altuve had opened the inning with singles off Edward Mujica.
Altuve had two of Houston's six hits and scored two runs.
Bud Norris, scheduled...
