Oakland A’s closer Grant Balfour has been added to the American League All-Star team by Tigers manager Jim Leyland. As three pitchers on the ASG roster (Detroit’s Justin Verlander, the A’s Bartolo Colon and the Mariners’ Hisashi Iwakuma) are pitching today, they were ineligible to pitch on Tuesday’s game – so Balfour was tapped to replace Colon on the A.L. squad. The announcement was made minutes ago. Last week, Balfour was considered by many to be one of the biggest ‘snubs‘ not given a spot on the All-Star team. Heading into today’s game with the Red Sox, Balfour is a perfect 25-25 in save opportunities this season (the only full-time MLB closer to not have blown a save yet this year), and he’s currently riding a streak of 43 consecutive saves, an ongoing Oakland record. With Balfour’s inclusion, the A’s will have three players participating in All-Star Week. Yoenis Cespedes was already announced as a participant in the Home Run Derby, which will take place tomorrow night.   The post
