One day after Derek Norris broke the big toe on his left foot the A's spoke of keeping the catcher off the disabled list.
"With a fracture like that there is some thought that Derek will feel better in the coming days" said manager Bob Melvin adding surgery isn't anticipated "but we'll see and hopefully have some resolution on Friday in Baltimore."
The A's are off Thursday giving Norris extra time to recover. If he goes on the DL the A's would add another catcher perhaps from outside the organization. Melvin said Triple-A Sacramento's David Freitas acquired from the Nationals in the Kurt Suzuki trade is next on the depth chart. Luke Montz is shelved with a shoulder injury.
Norris said he'll do whatever's possible to remain on the roster.
"Hopefully by Friday I'll be able to strap on a pair of spikes and play" Norris said. "I'm going to be as optimistic as possible. It's just a matter of how much the swelling and pain goes down in the next 48 hours."
Until further notice Stephen...
