An unreal turn of events on Wednesday led to the A’s going from tying the game in the ninth inning and being in position to steal a win to dropping their third straight.
The A’s were down one with two outs in the top of the ninth when Adam Rosales sent a pitch from Indians closer Chris Perez to deep left. The ball was ruled by umpires to have hit off Progressive Field’s high left field wall, and Rosales was left with a double instead of a game-tying homer.
The play went under video review. TV replays showed the ball clearly hit off a metal railing beyond the yellow stripe at the top of the wall, making Rosales’ double a home run. And upon further review from the men in blue, crew chief Angel Hernandez ruled the play … a double.
Upon the call being held up, Bob Melvin went ballistic and was summarily ejected. The A’s would go on to load the bases before Seth Smith grounded out to end the game, with the A’s knowing they’d been hosed.
