The A's released first baseman/designated hitter Jason Giambi today.
The five-time all-star was the A.L. Most Valuable Player with the A's in 2000. He was hitting .193 with 11 home runs and 40 RBI in 83 games this season.
He was placed on the disabled list July 20 with a strained right quadricep injury.
His average was the lowest in the majors for regular players when he was placed on the D.L.
Giambi was in his first season back with the A's after playing for the New York Yankees the past seven seasons. He played his first seven seasons in Oakland.
He has a .282 career batting average with 407 home runs, 1,319 RBI and 1,255 walks in 15 major league seasons.
He ranks tied for 43rd with Duke Snider on the major league home run list.
