The A's and Texas Rangers went their separate ways Wednesday afternoon in the wake of Oakland's 11-4 win at the Coliseum knowing that nothing has been decided. The promised land of the postseason in the American League West is completely up for grabs as it was on April 1. The caveat is that the other three teams in the division are non-qualifiers. Both the A's and Rangers have played 139 games and have 23 games to go. Both teams have 80 wins. Both have lost 59. Only one can win the A.L. West title. The A's got the better of the Rangers this week winning two of three. And on Wednesday they beat Texas ace Yu Darvish. Again. The A's play the Rangers three more times this season on the second leg of a six-game trip that starts Tuesday in Minnesota. If nothing changes Darvish would miss Oakland. If you are the Rangers you would normally hate the thought of your ace missing a start against the other A.L. West contender. But maybe it's the best for Texas. The A...

Texas Rangers: How to win the pennant

The Texas Rangers fell to the Oakland Athletics Monday in an important game one of a three game series. This was a painstaking loss as Texas gave up sole possession of first place in the AL West and now shares that position with Oakland. There is no reason, at this point, to lose faith in the Rangers. This is just one game in an otherwise very successful winning streak. However,...

Texas declined $56M proposal from Cruz last winter

Suspended star outfielder Nelson Cruz is expected to report to the Rangers' Instructional League sometime next week suggesting there's a decent chance he could be back playing for them come playoff time though a spot isn't guaranteed to him. However Cruz's chances to remain with the Rangers long-term seem somewhat iffier with the revelation that a Cruz offer presented...

Rangers activate Ogando from DL

The Texas Rangers have activated right-hander Alexi Ogando from the 15-day disabled list. Texas also recalled right-hander Ross Wolf and outfielders Engel Beltre and Joey Butler from Triple-A Round Rock on Tuesday, giving them 36 players on the active roster. Ogando began his third DL stint of the season on Aug. 20 because of an inflamed nerve in his right shoulder. He threw a...

Rangers beat A's 5-1 for sole possession of 1st

Martin Perez allowed one run in seven innings to win his sixth straight start and Mitch Moreland homered to move the Texas Rangers back into sole possession of first place in the AL West with a 4-1 victory over the Oakland Athletics on Tuesday night. After falling into a tie for first with the A's when they lost the series opener, the Rangers bounced back behind another strong...

Say Goodbye: Vladimir Guerrero Retires From Major League Baseball

Major League Baseball has lost one of its greats.  On September 3rd, 2013, from his home country of the Dominican Republic, 16 year MLB veteran Vladimir Guerrero has announced his retirement from the majors. The 38 year old Guerrero, a native of the town Don Gregorio, Nizao, has stated that his retirement is due in part to a couple of injuries he has in his right knee, as well as...

A’s Blast Rangers, Regain Division Lead Tie

After falling back a game behind the Rangers in the standings Tuesday night, the A’s whipped out their power bats Wednesday afternoon to put an exclamation point on regaining a tie for first place in the AL west. Four home runs and another solid starting pitching effort lifted Oakland to their 80th victory of the season with an emphatic 11-4 win over division rival Texas. Jerrod...

This feels familiar … and not good

I only got to listen to/watch two of the games in this Oakland series. And both were games the Rangers lost.  Is that a message to me?  I’m trying not to take it personally, Rangers. I’m also trying not to feel deja vu. But the boys are making it really hard. This is feeling a lot like last September, when Texas slowly faded out of first place in a month that completely ripped...

A's rout Rangers to even up AL West

There's something about Jarrod Parker's presence on the mound that is bringing out the best in the Oakland Athletics. Especially against Yu Darvish and the Texas Rangers. Parker got plenty of home-run help to pitch his way into Oakland's record book, and the surging A's pulled into a tie atop the American League West with Texas by overpowering the Rangers 11-4 on...

Rangers beat A's for sole possession of 1st

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) -- Martin Perez allowed one run in seven innings to win his sixth straight start and Mitch Moreland homered to move the Texas Rangers back into sole possession of first place in the AL West with a 4-1 victory over the Oakland Athletics on Tuesday night. After falling into a tie for first with the A's when they lost the series opener, the Rangers bounced...

Series Preview: Rangers vs. Angels vs. Spoiler Alert

vs. MONDAY, 9/6: Matt Garza vs. C.J. Wilson: Dream-killers Matt Garza is slated to start an important series for the Halos against the Texas Rangers. Important for the Rangers, I should say. They're in a hot race with the Oakland A's for the division lead and I can guarantee they have no intention of settling for the wildcard spot after last years fiasco. This is...

Trade Target: Elvis Andrus

It seems a bit far-fetched to view Elvis Andrus as a trade target, but he fills a pressing need at shortstop and is a young under-control player for the future. Sandy Alderson went on WFAN and talked to Mike Francesa yesterday and mentioned that it was like “pulling teeth” to get Ruben Tejada to do the little things to get better. And it’s very clear that Omar Quintanilla is...

Pitches Of The Week: Fernandez, Darvish, Rondon, Sale, Nova, Verlander

Jose Fernandez‘s slider is as close to an impossible pitch as I’ve seen. —– Here’s Jayson Werth as a frozen caveman thanks to a 57 mph eephus —– Yu Darvish‘s slow curve is unfair at times. Bruce Rondon. 103. Chris Sale‘s slider. Still unhittable. Ivan Nova with filthy stuff. Justin Verlander can still touch 99.
