The Oakland A's established an all-time American League record for strikeouts by batters in a season Wednesday, but no one on the team was a bit unhappy with the mark. For all their K's, the A's are flying high, in a playoff spot and, after a 9-3 victory at Texas, just three games behind the Texas Rangers in the AL West. Oakland tied the Tampa Bay Devil Rays' 2007 AL record of 1,324 strikeouts in the second inning when Roy Oswalt got rookie Chris Carter swinging. The next batter, Brandon Moss, fanned to give the A's the mark. By the end of the night, the Athletics' 11 strikeouts had advanced their ongoing record to 1,333. Along with the K's this season have come plenty of homers. The A's have 184, eighth most in the majors and a 60 percent increase from last year, when they had 114, 24th in the majors, and finished 22 games back in the West. One of Oakland's most frequent strikeout victims lately, right fielder Josh Reddick, got back on track Wednesday. His base hit in the seventh inning ended his career-worst hitless streak at 30 at-bats, and he also singled in the ninth inning. Reddick's teammates jokingly asked for the ball from the hit in the seventh -- and got it. So they inscribed it for Reddick, as if it were his first career hit. He said they wrote, among other things, stats like "10 broken bats, three broken helmets." Reddick tends to slam helmets and bats to the ground when he has poor at-bats.
