Oakland Athletics third baseman Scott Sizemore has undergone surgery on his left knee to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament.
The team says the surgery was performed Wednesday by Dr. Douglas Freedberg in Scottsdale, Ariz. The 27-year-old Sizemore will miss the entire season after getting hurt during the A's first full-squad workout Feb. 27 in Phoenix.
The A's say Sizemore, who batted .249 with 11 home runs and 52 RBIs in 93 games last year in his first season with Oakland, will begin a rehabilitation program in the coming week and is expected to be ready for the start of spring training next year.

A's pitcher makes trip to the nail salon
Brandon McCarthy had kind of a bad day on Tuesday. Starting for the A’s in their Cactus League game against the Cubs, McCarthy allowed four runs (two earned), five hits, three walks in just four innings of work. After the game, McCarthy did what any 28-year-old, male, professional athlete does to de-stress after a tough day: He went to the nail salon.
Actually, the trip was...
New-look A's gear up and wait for Ramirez to play
Manny Ramirez vows to be ready to return as his former sluggin' self.
Coco Crisp can already envision a little more than two months from now when the dreadlocked star might be swinging for the fences in the heart of Oakland's batting order.
Catcher Kurt Suzuki thinks about it. So does pitcher Dallas Braden and all the others, including Ramirez himself, of course.
For all...
Reliever Ranks Update: Balfour Breaks Top 30

Balfour breaks our top 30 at no. 28, which means you can probably still get him on the wire AFTER your draft. Red Sox reliever Daniel Bard falls out of our top 30 because Balfour...
The Position Battle That Isn’t: Third Base in Oakland
It is to say nothing new or bold to note that spring-training stats and performances are to be regarded as one might regard a neighborchild holding a pair of tweezers for no discernible reason — which is to say, with suspicion.
There is, first of all, the issue of limited sample size (which leaves authors like the present one performing regression gymnastics). Beyond that, spring...
2012 Spring Training Notes – American League West
Not a whole lot of exciting news in the American League West this spring, except for those in AL-only leagues hoping to bank on rookie pitchers Jarrod Parker and Brad Peacock in Oakland are going to have to wait awhile after both were sent to the minor leagues. Tyson Ross looks like he will snag one of the last two spots and while Graham Godfrey or Parker could serve as the 5th...
