REDNECK: Brett Myers, Astros closer
On Tuesday, the Houston Astros announced that their closer will not be $5.5 million man Brandon Lyon, but veteran starter Brett Myers. Myers is no stranger to a closer role. He occupied the closer role for the 2007 Philadelphia Phillies, when he notched 21 saves with a 2.87 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 10.80 strikeouts-per-nine-innings ratio in what were 48 of his 58 career relief appearances.
It is highly detrimental to a young team’s psyche to blow the few leads that they have late in the game and there is reason for concern with Myers. Myers’ fastball has dropped below the 90 MPH mark and he’s now 31-years-old. Just a cursory glance at Myers gives me the immediate theory that he may not be the hardest worker on the team.
