REDNECK: Brett Myers, Astros closer

On Tuesday, the Houston Astros announced that their closer will not be $5.5 million man Brandon Lyon, but veteran starter Brett Myers.  Myers is no stranger to a closer role.  He occupied the closer role for the 2007 Philadelphia Phillies, when he notched 21 saves with a 2.87 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 10.80 strikeouts-per-nine-innings ratio in what were 48 of his 58 career relief appearances.

It is highly detrimental to a young team’s psyche to blow the few leads that they have late in the game and there is reason for concern with Myers.  Myers’ fastball has dropped below the 90 MPH mark and he’s now 31-years-old.  Just a cursory glance at Myers gives me the immediate theory that he may not be the hardest worker on the team.

As per Tristan Cockroft of ESPN:  “Since the save became an official statistic in 1969, 37 teams have suffered 100-loss seasons. Only one closer for one of those 37 teams saved 30 games or more: David Aardsma of the 2010 Seattle Mariners (31). And only 14 of those teams had a closer manage 20 or more saves.”

Therefore, Brett Myers should be a consideration as a second or third reliever in NL-only leagues and a backup in mixed leagues.  One thing is for sure: you can probably get Myers on the cheap.
