Pro Sports Daily:
The search for the next manager of the Houston Astros appears to be nearing an end. Owner Jim Crane has said that the team hopes to have wrapped up a search by the end of next week, but Jeff Luhnow added Friday that they are closing in. "We will see (Monday) if we're ready to make a decision or if there are any next steps," he said, leaving open the chance for a second round of interviews. "I feel good about the due diligence we've done on our side. We are really digging into various options and, more importantly, we're very excited about the different possibilities." Among the possibilities are interim manager Tony DeFrancesco, Red Sox bench coach Tim Bogar, Rays bench coach Dave Martinez and Nationals third base coach Bo Porter. The Astros also interviewed Padres special assistant Brad Ausmus and former Phillies manager Larry Bowa, but both took their names out of the running. Ausmus was the latest to do so, quashing speculation Friday. "...

HOUSTON (AP) -- Jason Castro hit a three-run homer in the seventh inning and the Houston Astros beat fading Pittsburgh 4-1 Saturday night, handing the Pirates their fifth straight loss.
The Pirates fell 6 games behind St. Louis for the last NL wild-card spot. Pittsburgh has lost 17 of its last 21 and dropped to 74-77, moving closer to its 20th straight losing season.
When I remember watching Aurelio Lopez, I think of the Houston Astros pitcher who gave up what could have been the go-ahead run in the 14th inning of the 1986 NLCS. Of course, Billy Hatcher’s HR off Jesse Orosco ties the game. Lopez stayed on until the 16th inning, where he allowed the first two Mets to reach base as the Mets scored three runs. As we all remember, Orosco gave...

The reeling Pirates open a three-game series in Houston on Friday night. Lefty Jeff Locke gets the start for the Bucs. The Astros will toss right-hander Edgar Gonzalez.
The Pirates were blown away by the Astros – the 102-loss Astros – on Friday night. Jeff Locke gave up a 3-run bomb in the first inning. A slew of no-name Houston pitchers shut down the Bucs (starter Edgar Gonzalez had to leave in the 2nd with an injury). The Pirates struck out 12 times.
Locke pitched pretty well after the homer, and Garrett Jones hit a solo homer in the...
