Houston Astros center fielder Justin Maxwell was hit in the
left hand during last night’s contest against the Seattle Mariners. While a run
scored following the HBP, the pitch also fractured the fifth metacarpal on
Maxwell’s hand, according to Brian T. Smith of The Houston Chronicle.
Maxwell was disappointed by the injury, but he told
reporters that he expects to be back on the field soon enough.
“It’s definitely – a play on words – a bad break. But we
definitely got the team the win and I’m thankful for that,” said Maxwell,
who’ll see a hand specialist Wednesday for further evaluation. “I trust in
God’s plan and I’m not worried. I think I’ll be back on the field soon enough.”
The Astros wasted no time placing Maxwell on the disabled

At this point, manager Bo Porter said he’s unsure who will
fill the role of Houston’s everyday center fielder. Brandon Barnes and veteran
Rick Ankiel are both options on the team’s current roster.
