If only the Astros faced Seattle pitching every night. Jose Altuve Brandon Laird and L.J. Hoes accounted for 3 RBI apiece in an offensive outburst that plated six runs over the first three innings and chased Seattle lefty Joe Saunders (11-14) from the game. The effort helped secure a 13-2 win over the Mariners and Houston’s first series victory since Aug. 23-25 against Toronto. The early cushion was all the support Astros starter Jordan Lyles needed. After his teammates staked him to an early lead he was determined to stay aggressive. “You’ve really got to rely on that fastball after they put up so many runs on the board” said Lyles. “You’ve got to attack and if you give up a run or two here or there that’s fine but don’t give them a chance to come back and just get some quick outs.” Lyles’ approach served him well as he earned his third quality start of the season against Seattle by giving up four hits and one earned run while striking out five over six innings of work. “He’s pitching really well” said manager Bo Porter. “And I think it was good that we were able to get out to an early lead. He was able to get settled in and I feel like he did a tremendous job — especially the second time through the lineup — of really attacking with his fastball.” It took the Astros only one pitch to jump out to an early lead in the Emerald City when shortstop Jonathan Villar drove Saunders’ first offering of the night over the right field wall for his first career home run. In the second Carter hit a scorching grounder down the line at third that rattled around in the right field corner and earned him stand-up double. Right fielder L.J. Hoes wasted no time adding to the Houston lead driving home Carter one pitch later with a single to center. The Mariners got on the board next after Raul Ibanez led off the bottom of the second with a double off the wall in center and right fielder Franklin Gutierrez drove him in on the next at-bat.
