It's appropriate Disney World is located only a short distance from where the Houston Astros officially opened spring training Monday at The Astros Osceola County Stadium complex in Kissimmee, FL. Like Mickey's wonderland, spring baseball is a time that players and fans hope that dreams can come true, so much that new Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow proclaimed today the best day of the year. However, time will tell if the Astros stint in Florida will resemble Mr. Toads Wild Ride rather than a visit to the Magic Kingdom. "The dawning of a new era is a good way to say it," is how manager Brad Mills described his ballclub. "One of the biggest themes we are going to have this spring is competing for jobs. There are going to be guys who are hungry for spots on the bench, in the field and on the mound." The Astros will have a total of 63 players in camp this spring. This week, though, Mills concern is with the 28 pitchers, six catchers who reported for duty. One of the vital issues will be judging the health of catcher Jason Castro, which could be a key element in the Astros welfare this coming season. After missing the 2011 season due to a knee injury, and surgery on his left foot in January, his progress will be monitored closely. Mills said the plan was to let him do what he can do to the best of his abilities and move on. After Monday's workout, the news was good. "I caught my first bullpen and I couldn't ask for it to feel any better," Castro said after participating in catching drills and a bullpen group. "I could have caught another one, but I understand the progression. It's been a long year and I have put a lot of work into getting back healthy and ready to go. If that means easing into things in the beginning, then that is what I will do." After catching 67 games as a rookie in 2010, Castro was anointed the Astros regular catcher last season before his year abruptly came to an end in only his second game of the spring when he was injured while trying to avoid a tag by Detroit Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera. Mills again looks to Castro to be the Astros starter this season provided there are no health issues. "We all saw how this ballclub played when he came up two years ago as a first-time rookie," said Mills. "He took charge with the pitching staff and played so well behind the dish and got some big hits. It was such a partial blow last year when we weren't able to get a game out of him." Luhnow, who attended workouts with new Astros owner Jim Crane, put it succinctly when he said, "Jason is critical to the future of this team. He is the type of player we want." Castro's injury last year is one example of the untold direction a team's fortunes can turn in spring training. Mills is all too aware, as he described how he will judge the success of spring training when the time comes to return to Houston in April. "If everyone is healthy and ready to start the season," he explained. "If we accomplish some things, we will be able to find out how some position changes come out and how guys play together. You go back and start talking about that we are going to have a whole different lineup than we did a year ago, these guys need to feel comfortable with the guy playing next to them." With day one under their belts, the Astros ride has started smooth.

Astros hope to improve before leaving NL

The Houston Astros are entering their final season before moving to the American League in 2013, and that's not the only transition the franchise is facing. After 106 losses last year, Houston has a new owner, a new general manager and a bit of a clean slate as spring training begins. Houston's pitchers and catchers have their first workout Monday, and the Astros are eager...

New Astros owner makes the big leagues

New Astros owner Jim Crane made it clear on the first day of spring training that there is more to his investment than money. Baseball has been a part of him since he was a pitcher ''from (age) 7 to 22, nonstop,'' Crane said Monday while Astros pitchers and catchers participated in their first organized workout of the year. ''It's fun to get back here...

Mission Possible: Houston Astros and the Single-Season Loss Record

If you are wondering how bad the Houston Astros are, let me paint a picture. If the teams formed to make a Monopoly board, the Houston Astros would be Baltic Avenue. Or to use a better analogy, the Houston Astros would be “Hamsterdam” from The Wire. In the show, the concept of “Hamsterdam” is to corner off all the drug dealers to an abandoned area of town...

Pepperdine baseball sporting old school Astros uniforms (Picture)

Pepperdine’s baseball team is sporting new uniforms this season that make them look like the old school Houston Astros. They’re getting fantastic reviews except for the UA logo square in the middle that Uni Watch aptly calls “a major turd in the punch bowl.” Except for the logo, I can dig ‘em. Let’s just hope Pamela approves. Picture Credit: Shotgun...

Lyles, Happ fighting for spots in rotation

By Mark Mitchell FoxSportsHouston.com The theme of the Houston Astros spring training is competition, and one of the most contested battles is who will emerge to earn spots in the starting pitching rotation. With Wandy Rodriguez, Brett Myers and Bud Norris assured -- use that word cautiously with this team - the first three spots in the rotation, a variety of candidates are vying...

Schafer apologizes for offseason misstep

Astros center fielder Jordan Schafer, who was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia during a traffic stop following last season, apologized publicly for the first time Monday shortly after arriving at camp.

Castro enters into important spring with Astros

Jason Castro remains the Astros' catcher of the future, and he came to Spring Training in good health and with plenty left to prove. Despite losing a year to injury in his young career, Castro is thankful to be back on the field and back in his element.

Recovering Castro back behind plate

For the first time since he was in the Arizona Fall League last October, Astros catcher Jason Castro caught in the bullpen during Monday's first day of workouts. Castro had surgery in January to remove a bone from his left foot after missing all of last year due to ACL surgery on his right knee.

Elder statesman Livan enjoys role of mentor

The oldest Astros player in camp is 15-year veteran Livan Hernandez, who signed a Minor League contract with hopes of winning a rotation spot. The 37-year-old Hernandez said he signed with the Astros because he heard great things about the organization.

Astros to first groom best arms for rotation

The Astros have plenty of live arms in camp, and it's the belief of general manager Jeff Luhnow to develop the club's best arms as starters until it's deemed they're best suited for the bullpen.

Expect bumps, bruises as PFPs commence

Pitcher Lucas Harrell was sporting a big bruise on his right forearm Tuesday, one day after he suffered the first injury of the spring when he took a ground ball off his arm during pitchers' fielding practice (PFPs).

MLB Preview 2012: The Houston Astros

Last year in this space I bashed the now former columnist for the Houston Chronicle Richard Justice for creating a false narrative in regard to the supposed youth movement the Astros were about to field. Justice had been arguing that the 2011 season was all about the performance of three young players, namely Brett Wallace, Chris Johnson, and Jason Castro. If this was all the season...
