The Astros optioned infielder Marwin Gonzalez to Triple-A Oklahoma City and cut left-hander Wade LeBlanc on Monday.
The team said corresponding roster moves would be made Tuesday, when Houston begins a series at home against the St. Louis Cardinals.
The 24-year-old Gonzalez has a paltry .250 on-base percentage with four homers and 14 RBIs. The switch-hitter has started 50 of 77 games this season, making eight errors while mostly sharing time at shortstop with veteran Ronny Cedeno.
Gonzalez's most memorable moment came in the second game of the year when he singled with two outs in the ninth inning against Texas to break up Yu Darvish's bid for a perfect game.
The 28-year-old LeBlanc was designated for assignment, so the Astros have 10 days to trade, release or send him outright to the minors. He had a 9.82 ERA in three relief appearances for Houston after getting claimed off waivers from Miami on June 8.
LeBlanc is 1-5 with a 5.50 ERA in 16 major league games this year, including seven starts.

Sing it with me now:
Justin Maxwell's silver hammer back to the DL was led.
Justin Maxwell's silver hammer just dove on his head.

Two thoughts. First...ouch. Second, they should put some bubble wrap on this guy as he spends more time on the DL than most.
ST. LOUIS -- The Astros have struck out more than any team in the majors. They've made the most errors and their bullpen has the highest ERA. They own the worst run differential in the majors and settled into last place in the AL West weeks ago.
And guess what? The Astros are doing better than expected.
With only a handful of proven big leaguers on the roster and the organization...
HOUSTON -- Allen Craig homered and had a season-high four hits with three RBIs, and Carlos Beltran and David Freese both added a homer as the St. Louis Cardinals got back on track by rolling to a 13-5 win over the Houston Astros on Tuesday night.
The Cardinals managed just seven runs combined in a three-game sweep by the Texas Rangers, the first time they were swept this season...
The other day I happened to think of Ronny Cedeno and how awful he was in 2006. I couldn't help but wonder how Starlin Castro's 2013 season compared to Cedeno's 2005.
