LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Lucas Harrell took a shutout into the eighth inning, J.D. Martinez homered and the Houston Astros used four relievers in the eighth to get out of a bases-loaded jam and help secure a 3-1 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday night. Harrell (4-3) scattered five singles, walked three and did not strike out a batter during the longest of his 15 big league starts. The 26-year-old right-hander, facing the Dodgers for the first time, allowed only two runners as far as second base and got 17 of his outs on groundballs -- including all three outs on comebackers to the mound in the seventh inning. Harrell departed after giving up a one-out single to Elian Herrera. Wesley Wright gave up a walk to Bobby Abreu and a single to Andre Ethier before Wilton Lopez walked Jerry Hairston Jr. on four pitches to force in a run. But Ivan DeJesus struck out against lefty Fernando Abad as a pinch-hitter for James Loney, and Fernando Rodriguez retired A.J. Ellis on a flyball. Brett Myers pitched a scoreless ninth for his 12th save in 13 chances, nailing down the Astros' fourth straight victory. Clayton Kershaw (4-2) was charged with three runs -- two earned -- and five hits over seven innings with six strikeouts on the fourth anniversary of his major league debut. The reigning NL Cy Young winner, who shut out St. Louis on six hits last Saturday, worked with runners on base in each of the first five innings and gave up five extra-base hits, equaling a career worst. On April 24, 2010, he gave up four doubles and a triple in a six-inning no-decision at Washington. Kershaw came in with a streak of 22 scoreless innings before the Astros ended it with an unearned run in the first. Jose Altuve opened the game with one of Houston's four doubles and legged it home when second baseman Herrera made a wild relay throw trying to complete a potential inning-ending double-play on Carlos Lee's grounder to third base. Martinez made it 3-0 in the third with his fourth homer, following a double by Jed Lowrie. The Dodgers came in with a 19-4 record at Chavez Ravine, which matched their best home start in franchise history. They also won 19 of their first 23 home games in 1980, when they beat the Astros in the final three games of the regular season at home to force a one-game playoff -- the Astros won. Astros bullpen catcher falls for snake prank

Pranks are fun. They're even more fun when the victim is deathly afraid of snakes. Astros bullpen catcher Javier Bracamonte has a deep-rooted fear of snakes, so the team decided to take advantage of it and scare the living daylights out of him. A rubber snake was placed in the bucket of batting practice baseballs that Bracamonte was using, with the hopes that he'd grab it...

The Isotopes are about to get stronger, courtesy of the Dodgers

The Albuquerque Isotopes are about to get a lot stronger, and it's not necessarily a bad thing for the Dodgers. Obviously getting the potential league MVP back is always a plus, but it also allows the Dodgers to give the young-ins the appropriate playing time -- in Triple-A. Matt Kemp and Juan Rivera at set to make rehab appearances there Sunday and Monday, it means a...

Astros have had Lyles, Rodriguez coming and going

It's the general manager's equivalent of managing all out, but even with a long-term plan in mind, the Astros aren't worried about it. Young starters Jordan Lyles and Aneury Rodriguez have been riding the shuttle between Houston and Triple-A Oklahoma City. Since Kyle Weiland went on the disabled list 28 days ago, the Astros have claimed an extra spot on their roster...

Astros pitchers excelling early this season

If the Astros are in a rebuilding mode, one major element appears ahead of schedule. For the month of May the Astros' staff ERA of 2.75 leads all of Major League Baseball. If one considers that sample too small, the season-long ERA is 3.44 ranks sixth. The relievers' performance has been especially impressive: The bullpen has a WHIP of 1.19, 7th among all 30 teams for the...

GIFcap: Aaron Harang sprays A.J. Ellis with water while Dee Gordon gives worst pie face ever

After A.J. Ellis’ game-winning walk-off homer, Dee Gordon attempted to give Ellis the customary post-game interview pie to the face, but failed at epic levels. Since that failed, Aaron Harang took matters into his own hands and sprayed down Ellis with a water gun fro the dugout, taking the interviewer as collateral damage. It would

Jerry Hairston Jr. activated off the disabled list, Justin Sellers added to the disabled list

Jerry Hairston Jr. is in the lineup today, meaning he has been activated off the disabled list. Unfortunately, the corresponding move is Justin Sellers heading to the disabled list. Hairston is batting .315/.403/.463/.866 on the season, which isn’t even the best part, as he was one of the best defenders in the MLB for the

Dodgers exec wants Winter Classic

Dodger Stadium, home of the Los Angeles Dodgers. (Photo credit: Wikipedia) Oh boy most of us are probably just chomping at the bit to see this hockey game. Or not! I see these outdoor games as a distraction away from the actual hockey game. Hey I admit, that I liked the 24/7 Flyers and Rangers on HBO this past winter; that was an awesome show and you got to know the players...

Dodgers Minor League Report - 5/24/12

A strong start from Angel Sanchez and a dominant outing from Matt Magill capped today's minor league action.

It's Still Painful....

I spotted this card for a seemingly low Buy-It-Now price with a Best Offer option. There was a pending offer, but the price was so good I had no choice but to swoop in and purchase it before it got away. You know, like Ned Colletti let the player depicted on said card get away. It's a refractor, numbered out of 500 - 430/500, to be exact - and is one of Santana's few Dodger...
